Lead PA Cardiovascular Thoracic Program

Job Summary

Provides optimum assistance to physicians through the performance of a wide variety of health care services, such as patient care tasks, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic procedures. Oversee duties of the Cardio-thoracic mid-level practitioners. Perform daily and monthly scheduling of practitioners, weekend schedules and PTO. Ensure proper mid-level support coverage for physicians, provide education, including calls, rounding on patients, and consults as needed. Work with the Division Chair on a routine basis for optimal Cardio-thoracic services to CAMC, Mon General patients, to include Evidence Based Care. The ideal candidate will possess: 1. A track record of proven leadership 2. An interest in establishing a one-year PA Surgical fellowship training program 3. A history of, or interest in clinical research 4. Certificate of Added Qualification in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CAQ-CVTS)

 

Responsibilities

1. Continue to practice clinically with a primary focus in the operating room, but also have the ability to understand and perform the job all other team members Includes -• The Physician Assistant shall, under appropriate direction and supervision by a Physician, augment the Physician's data gathering abilities in order to assist the supervising Physician in reaching decisions and instituting care plans for the Physician's patients. A Physician Assistant shall have, as a minimum, the knowledge and competency to perform the following functions and may under appropriate supervision perform them; this list is not intended to be specific of all-inclusive: May assist physician in one or more of the following: ED, ICU, Nursing units, OR. Screen patients to determine need for medical attention. Review patient records to determine health status. Take a patient history as relates to initial cardio-thoracic consult. Perform a physical examination as relates to initial cardiothoracic consult. Record pertinent patient data. Make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatments of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition. Prepare patient summaries. Initiate requests for commonly performed initial laboratory and radiological studies. Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies. Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations; i.e., cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, cardiothoracic conditions. 2. Managing the roles of all other APP’s of the service including working with other team leads with regards to recruitment, remediation, discipline, and career advancement under the direction of the department Chair or Cardiac and Thoracic Division Chiefs. 3. Assist the Chair and division chiefs in selecting team leads as needed for the various clinical settings 4. Facilitating cross training of other APP’s as needed, under the direction of the Department Chair or Cardiac and Thoracic Division Chiefs. 5. Will participate in the OR midlevel call schedule 6. Ensure all APP’s remain current with licensing and CME requirements 7. Play an active role in APP education by facilitating educational courses in echo, CALS, and ECMO. 8. Be responsible for planning the curriculum and securing speakers for any APP sessions at various Vandalia Health conferences throughout the year. 9. Oversee other team members in the development of orders sets for both the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. 10. The lead APP will be responsible for management of the above at both campuses and will be expected to provide clinical coverage and oversee APP’s as agreed upon by the Department Chair. 11. Establish relationships with the various PA training programs in the state through: facilitating CT Surgery clinical rotations, ensuring outside participation in Vandalia conferences, and arranging lectures from the CT staff at each of the schools.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Education 

• Master's Degree (Required) Experience: 5 year experience in the area of clinical specialty.

 

Credentials 

• Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
• Physician Assistant, Licensed (Required) 1. Training: Physician Assistant, certified 2. At least 5 years of clinical experience in CT surgery with proficiency in Endoscopic vein harvesting, endoscopic vessel harvesting, and first assisting 3. Track record of teaching EVH, ERH, and first assisting to other APP’s in the operating room 4. ICU experience, including ECMO management 5. Experience in all clinical settings in which cardiac surgery patients are treated including outpatient management, OR, ICU, and stepdown including the discharge process. 6. Ability to perform new inpatient consults and complete new patient workups in the outpatient clinic. 1. Training: Physician Assistant, certified 2. At least 5 years of clinical experience in CT surgery with proficiency in Endoscopic vein harvesting, endoscopic vessel harvesting, and first assisting 3. Track record of teaching EVH, ERH, and first assisting to other APP’s in the operating room 4. ICU experience, including ECMO management 5.
