Overview The Lead Phlebotomist/EKG Technician provides direct and indirect inpatient and outpatient care services including phlebotomy, ECG testing and transportation of patients. Also responsible for the collection of blood specimens using standard venipuncture and microtainer techniques, orders, receives, and prepares specimens for laboratory testing, client services, training, and investigations in the laboratory and various clerical tasks as requested. Responsibilities Verifies patient identification by using two patient identifiers: Name, DOB or Medical Record Number. Never identifies patient by room number. Labels all specimens in front of patient with required information, EMR ID, date and time of collection. Blood is drawn according to established hospital procedures in a safe manner with minimum trauma to the patient. Monitors for adverse effects of blood draws. Compliant with all safety standards and utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens are collected correctly. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or management of unresolved orders. Obtains blood specimens from all age ranges including newborn, pediatrics, adult, and geriatric patients. Assists in the preparation of urine specimens for laboratory testing. Provides instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to students and employees. Mentor new employees and ensure competency. Follows, reviews, and writes general laboratory, safety, and departmental policies and procedures. Transport specimens as required. Troubleshoots phlebotomy/EKG service concerns, coordinates daily work assignments. Supports clinical leadership with daily workflow and problem solving. Helps monitor inventory, supplies, and inform supervisor when ordering is needed. Provides efficient transportation for patients both to and from requesting service areas. Utilizes selected healthcare IT applications proficiently as assigned by management. Qualifications 3 years experience Hospital in Inpatient and Outpatient Based Phlebotomy is required. High School Diploma/Equivalent is required. Post-Employment: BLS, provided by the American Heart Association (AHA), required within 30 days of hire. Post-Employment: Phlebotomy and EKG competency required within 60 days of hire.
