Lead Referral Specialist

Summary:
The Lead Referral Specialist reports to the Supervisor Referral Specialist and Director of Administrative Central Services. Under general supervision they are responsible for coordinating the effective and efficient patient flow in regard to processing referrals for the centralized referral department: processing referrals tracking referrals and closing the referral loop. Monitors work queues to ensure the care coordination cycle is followed and provides a good patient experience.

Responsibilities:

Maintain current knowledge of insurer referral/authorization requirements and have a working understanding of the patient population and demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Acts as a resource to practice team members regarding referral issues.

Participates in practice performance and quality improvement activities. Attends required meetings and trainings as directed.

Assigns daily referral coordinator coverage for all offices based on referral volume and staff attendance in compliance with service standards

Communicates directly with the practice staff and managers to support the timely processing of referrals

Ensures all referral coordinators adhere to department policy and procedure

Fills in for Supervisor of Referrals Coordination

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High school degree or the equivalent. Billing and medical knowledge.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of clinical referral experience required. Patient centered Medical Home Practice (PCMH) referral experience preferred.

Data entry skills and computer experience required. Strong customer service focus.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Organized and able to manage competing priorities.

Able to take and follow through with delegated tasks and accountability.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the Brown University Health with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
