Lead SRE Engineer - VP

At Barclays, we don’t just adapt to the future – Embark on a transformative journey as Lead SRE Engineer - VP where you'll spearhead the evolution of our Global Platforms Services function. As a member of the Platform Services SRE team, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of critical systems and platform delivered by GPS. Your role involves leading a team of engineers to implement robust monitoring and observability tools, automate routine processes, and develop a structured incident management process. You’ll be responsible for fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, creating comprehensive documentation, and mentoring team members to build SRE skills and attitudes. By balancing innovation and reliability through error budgets and capacity planning, the lead ensures that the organization's services meet their service-level objectives and provide a seamless user experience. Additionally, your role requires effective stakeholder management, leadership, and decision-making to support business strategy and risk management

To be successful as a Lead SRE Engineer - VP, you should have experience with:

Ability to provide technical leadership to complex technical problems. Strong understanding of enterprise design principles to build secure, fault tolerant and scalable systems.Strong understanding of Agile, DevOps, SRE and CI:CD.Strong hands on development experience in Java or or Python any other programming language.Strong understanding of release and change management process (ITIL). Understanding of Git (or similar) source code control system.Understanding of build automation and dependency management tools such as Maven/Gradle. Experience of providing people leadership to small to midsize teamsA strong work ethic - team player, creative, passionate and disciplined.

Some highly valued skills include:

Working experience of IaC and Automation tools such as Ansible/Chef/Terraform.Working experience of event bus products such as Kafka.Experience in testing methodologies like TDD, BDD etc and testing automation.Ability to understand how and where third part products could be deployed. Good knowledge of vendor evaluation and selection best practice.Excellent understanding of architectural and design patterns (e.g. Domain Driven Architecture, Event Driven Architecture, Adaptive and Responsive design, Infrastructure as Code, AAA - Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting etc.)Experience of API development using REST / SOAP.

Purpose of the role

To apply software engineering techniques, automation, and best practices in incident response, to ensure the reliability, availability, and scalability of the systems, platforms, and technology through them. 

Accountabilities

Availability, performance, and scalability of systems and services through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and capacity planning.Resolution, analysis and response to system outages and disruptions, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.Development of tools and scripts to automate operational processes, reducing manual workload, increasing efficiency, and improving system resilience.Monitoring and optimisation of system performance and resource usage, identify and address bottlenecks, and implement best practices for performance tuning.Collaboration with development teams to integrate best practices for reliability, scalability, and performance into the software development lifecycle, and work closely with other teams to ensure smooth and efficient operations.Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations, and actively contribute to the organization's technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
