Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Learning Facilitator/Instructor, Clinical Informatics provides education and instruction including individual and group learning opportunities in support of the implementation and adoption of clinical information systems (CIS). The role adapts, implements and evaluates education programs and resources using specialized theory and knowledge of generalized and specialized clinical or non-clinical practice as applicable, as well as teaching and learning principles and processes. The Learning Facilitator/Instructor consults, confers and collaborates with educators and clinical / non-clinical program and team members in promotion of continuous quality improvement, resolution of education issues and coordination of activities required for progressive educational and clinical practice programs. The role takes corrective action with respect to individual and group learning needs, escalates issues as necessary and communicates progress with team and Manager.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Utilizes educational/curriculum theory and knowledge to deliver and evaluate education programs for clinicians and staff.
2. Provides direct clinical instruction to new and existing staff as required and facilitates learning by role modeling clinical information system and clinical workflow skills and practices to learners in a classroom or at designated workstation, promoting skill development.
3. Supports students, preceptors/preceptees, peer mentors/mentees and clinical programs using teaching and learning principles and a program planning and evaluation process to meet the identified educational needs of learners.
4. Assesses individual and group learning needs, in collaboration with peer mentors, Professional Practice and Education leaders, and/or other internal clinical program subject matter experts as applicable, by observing activities, discussing clinical information system use, issues and implications. May analyze data such as staff competency assessments and growth plans, practice changes and quality improvement indicators, to determine specific educational requirements to support learner competency and skill development using the new clinical information system.
5. Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and educational reference documents for team members and/or staff/providers by using established educational standards, and ensuring content reflects the most up-to-date, peer reviewed, evidence-based best practice. Strives to match content and delivery method. Provides feedback to other developers to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
6. Utilizes a variety of teaching/learning strategies to support education and instruction activities with individuals and groups including facilitating groups, coaching, mentoring, conducting formal/informal presentations and demonstrations, coordinating introduction of new skills/procedures, arranging and providing in-service sessions and using educational technology and self-directed learning methods to implement planned programs. Facilitates scheduling of education sessions by collaborating with staff and/or learning team members to determine times, frequency and duration to ensure effective use of resources; maintains records and identifies/schedules team member attendance at update sessions.
7. Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical information system education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning outcomes using program/resource evaluation, learner behaviours, utilization statistics and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
8. Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities by evaluating effect of changes in clinician, provider, and staff practice, generating recommendations for alternative approaches, following up with the Manager on incident reports raised in class, and recommending changes to selected policies, procedures or protocols; drafts new and/or revised procedures, standards and criteria for the CIS Learning program in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. Initiates strategies to improve staff/provider learning using principles of continuous quality improvement to promote delivery of high quality educational services.
9. Participates in team working groups, committees, or meetings as an education resource by providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that CIS educational needs are addressed. Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of education services.
10. Provides consultation to staff regarding CIS education by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, providing verbal and written feedback for the individual to continue competency development, meeting with team members on a one-to-one basis and recommending educational programs/resources and facilitating development of learning and/or professional growth plans.
11. Demonstrates effective facilitation and classroom management practices and communication skills between various interdisciplinary groups, staff, providers, and peers.
12. Maintains and updates own knowledge within area of practice. Ensures own educational currency by incorporating clinical instructor experience within a plan for ongoing professional growth.
13. Participates in an ongoing community of practice to maintain skills, knowledge, and professional development in the areas of CIS education; acts as an ongoing resource to site and champion the CIS education and core competencies.
14. Acts as a champion for Clinical Informatics.
15. Sets measurable goals and objectives within a team environment, incorporating the organization’s vision and values, goals and corporate plan. Develops plans in collaboration with designated personnel/team for professional development. Reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established timeframes.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) OR current practicing registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BCCNM for relevant mental health positions.
• Three (3) years’ recent, related teaching experience and/or group facilitation relevant to the clinical area or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Valid BC Driver's License as local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.
• Travel outside of existing geographic area and/or overnight travel may be required, and will be compensated in accordance with applicable collective agreement language.
Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of organization’s policies, procedures and standards of care.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate, engage and lead in a classroom setting.
• Demonstrated adult education delivery experience.
• Demonstrated experience with learner assessment and providing feedback.
