Learning Specialist

The Comprehensive Assistance Program (CAP) at Iona University is a fee-based, optional support program that offers individualized, comprehensive services for students with diagnosed learning disabilities, AD/HD, traumatic brain injuries, or those on the autism spectrum. CAP is committed to fostering academic success, personal growth, and independence through targeted support and mentorship.

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Specialist to join our CAP team. This part-time position (18–29 hours per week) is scheduled during standard business hours (8:30am-4:30pm) and plays a critical role in supporting students’ academic and personal development through one-on-one coaching, group activities, and skill-building workshops.

 

Key Responsibilities

Provide individualized academic coaching and mentorship to students Facilitate group-based activities, such as workshops and study groups, focused on key academic skills such as: Organizational strategies Time management Study techniques Test-taking strategies Critical thinking, reading, and writing skills Collaborate with CAP team members to ensure integrated, student-centered support Conduct proactive outreach to promote engagement and follow-up Engage in ongoing professional development related to academic coaching, learning strategies and disability support. Participate in meetings with students and their instructors to clarify assignments or address academic concerns. Maintain accurate, timely electronic records of student sessions and progress Participate in weekly staff meetings and contribute to team planning Participate in all aspects of the Summer Transition Program for incoming students Represent CAP at university events related to student recruitment and program promotion Connect students with appropriate campus resources (e.g., tutoring, counseling, academic advising) to support holistic success.
