LECTURER, GENERAL EDUCATION UCLA CLUSTER PROGRAM
Cluster 80CW: Frontiers in Human Aging

The UCLA Undergraduate Education Initiatives unit seeks a lecturer for Spring Quarter (AY 2024-25) to teach a seminar as part of the General Education UCLA Cluster Program. This position includes developing and teaching a seminar course (Cluster 80CW) for freshman students from various backgrounds. The seminar should cover a topic such as cellular or brain aging, biological markers of aging, or any epidemiological/biological aging-related content.

This position includes designing a curriculum and syllabus, generating assignments, and crafting related course components for their own seminar. Furthermore, in addition to the assignments and exams, the lecturer will grade student submissions and presentations utilizing appropriate rubrics created by the lecturer and shared with students.

We are specifically seeking a scholar who can provide a biological perspective on aging, preferably someone with knowledge of “epigenetic clocks" (special biomarkers that can be used to measure “biological age”). The ideal candidate should be able to explain the complex biological changes that occur with age, which may include both animal and/or human in-situ models. Familiarity with the current research on "anti-aging" treatments or interventions would be beneficial. The candidate should be able to “center” this biological perspective in the context of other frameworks such as public health or policy. The candidate will teach students how to read and understand basic academic research papers, and how to develop arguments using the scientific literature. Students will then complete a capstone paper reflecting their knowledge and understanding of the material.

UCLA has a diverse student population in one of the more diverse cities in the nation; we particularly seek candidates who have taught similarly diverse students in a major research university.

Required Qualifications:
• An earned doctorate from an accredited university
• College-level teaching experience, especially to a General Education population
• Knowledge and training in the biological sciences or other related fields
