CIBC is seeking an attorney to focus on research and proactive monitoring of state law in support of the activities of entities within CIBC Bancorp USA. This includes CIBC Bank USA, an Illinois-chartered state member bank, and CIBC Private Wealth, made up of a national trust company, Delaware trust company, and registered investment advisor. The attorney will also support CIBC’s US Privacy Office, which provides advice on US privacy laws and risks to all of CIBC’s US Region entities and to CIBC’s non-US entities.
**What You’ll Be Doing**
This attorney will identify, analyze, and advise on proposed and enacted state and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and policies that are relevant to CIBC’s US activities. The attorney will work closely with relevant CIBC lines of business, developing familiarity with CIBC’s US activities and strategic priorities, and honing the ability to determine what is relevant. The attorney will also work with the Regulatory Compliance Management (RCM) team within Compliance. The state law research performed by this attorney will also support CIBC’s government relations activities.
The attorney will conduct state law research on topics such as the following: loan disclosures; loan servicing, including interest on escrow, collections, and foreclosure; powers of attorney; fiduciary responsibilities; decedent accounts; minor accounts; unclaimed property; notary requirements; and other topics as appropriate.
**Who You Are**
Applicants must be licensed attorneys in good standing in at least one US state or the District of Columbia. Please specify your state(s) of licensure in your application materials. In addition, we are looking for the following attributes:
+ Airtight legal research skills, including facility with Westlaw and/or Lexis-Nexis and Shepardizing case law.
+ A genuine interest and ability in learning CIBC’s business, and the business of banking and financial services generally. This understanding is necessary to be able to identify and analyze relevant laws and cases, as well as relevant exemptions and exceptions, and to identify the right internal contacts to provide additional information as part of making such determinations.
+ Prior experience in banking and/or investment services is helpful, though not required.
+ Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively summarize and present detailed research to a wide variety of audiences.

This role has an expected salary range of $115,000 - $130,000 USD for the market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
