Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a part-time Library Assistant II for its Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch. This position assists with the library's daily operations and performs administrative duties, including typing, filing, ordering supplies, and assisting with events; provides customer service to patrons by providing information, promoting general facility usage, and operating all library equipment. The Library Assistant II provides exceptional front-line support to patrons, assisting with library and community service inquiries, facilitating access to resources, and ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors. This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to navigate library technology, and a commitment to fostering community engagement through programs, events, and administrative support.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $19.69 Hourly
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.
+ Provides customer service by providing assistance with computers and equipment, searching database for information and resources and recommending reading material.
+ Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials, replacing damaged materials, and preparing lost book forms.
+ Assists with events by setting up displays and researching and preparing information about authors.
+ Assists with the receiving and ordering of new library materials using the on-line computer program by entering and checking the received orders and assisting with the creation of selection lists and purchase orders.
+ Delivers outstanding customer service at the public desk by addressing patron inquiries about library and community services.
+ Assists in navigating library facilities, resources, and technology, including computers, the NPL catalog, the NPL website, copy machines, fax, and scanning devices.
+ Offers guidance on resource retrieval and recommend materials based on patron needs.
+ Supports library programming and events within the library and as part of outreach efforts.

+ Executes administrative tasks, including preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, and distributing library materials.
+ Assists in planning and executing events, including setting up displays and conducting research.
+ Reads and interpret reports, library applications, journals, policies, and correspondence to stay informed and provide accurate information.
+ Performs general mathematical calculations as needed.
+ Writes reports and correspondence to support library operations.
+ Occasionally oversees helpers, assistants, interns, volunteers, or temporary staff.
+ Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors to meet library needs.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience in library or related customer service work..
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Hours: 20 hours weekly – day, evenings, and weekends
+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
