Description
The City of Norfolk’s Department of Libraries is currently seeking a full-time Library Assistant II for it’s Little Creek Branch that performs customer service roles at the public service desks as well as engaging in Children’s programming with regular programs for the public, and outreach activities. This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Performs administrative duties including typing, filing, ordering supplies, and assisting with events. Provides customer service to patrons by providing information, promoting general usage of facilities, and operating all library equipment.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.
+ Provides customer service by providing assistance with computers and equipment, searching database for information and resources and recommending reading material.
+ Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials, replacing damaged materials, and preparing lost book forms.
+ Assists with the receiving and ordering of new library materials using the on-line computer program by entering and checking the received orders and assisting with the creation of selection lists and purchase orders.
+ Responsible for developing and implementing children programming on a regular basis.
+ Assists with the maintenance of the branch’s library space and collection.
+ Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating Interlibrary loans, and collecting fees.
+ Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lifts up to 25 pounds from ground to waist-level, bend, stoop, push, pull, and complete tasks requiring manual dexterity to retrieve books and other materials from shelves/cabinets ranging in height from floor level to approximately 6 feet, and unpack incoming books/orders.
+ Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.
+ Ability to use good judgement in daily services to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.
+ High degree of comfort learning new technologies.
+ Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.
+ Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience in library or related customer service work..
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30AM-6PM
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
