Description
Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center is seeking a part time Licensed Music Therapist. Flexible 20 hour per week schedule, specific days and hours within school day can be determined based on candidate availability. Must be willing to travel, and may cover areas between Lockport, Buffalo and Cheektowaga.
The Licensed Music Therapist is responsible for designing and providing individual and group music therapy to facilitate positive changes in children and adults with various disabilities through the use of music interventions to address non-musical goals. In addition, the Music Therapist works as a member of the educational habilitation team in developing and implementing goals for each child’s Individualized Education Plan (“IEP”).
Essential Functions:
+ Conducts and documents initial music therapy evaluations upon district CPSE/CSE approval.
+ Establishes music therapy objectives and determines frequency and duration of therapy.
+ Designs and implements goals toward development of age-appropriate skills for each child as indicated on each child’s IEP or IFSP.
+ Provides individual and group music therapy programs.
+ Responsible for designing therapeutic sessions involving instrumental exploration, vocal improvisation, and creative movement. Additionally responsible for providing appropriate models that will be supported in all areas of development including cognition, speech and language, sensory motor, and social emotional.
+ Plans session environment to encourage learning, independence and generalization of skills. Must work with other classroom team members and therapists to ensure classroom safety, proper supervision, and promote open communication in discussing the progress of shared clients.
+ Frequent travel to various BHSC sites, area school districts, and client homes.
+ Establish and maintain positive rapport and communication with area school district administrators, staff, and parents in the pursuance of increased advocacy for the music therapy profession.
+ Are responsible for contacting the CSE for the districts and/or parents to set up evaluations and therapy within their schedules once initiated by Directors. In addition, they must research and comply with district requirements for paperwork, therapy make-ups or cancellations, meetings and other applicable policies and procedures.
+ Licensed and registered Creative Arts Therapist will oversee the experience requirement of BHSC music therapy applicants applying for licensure in New York State in Creative Arts Therapy. The supervisor will provide oversight, guidance, and direction to the applicant in developing skills as a Creative Arts Therapist, according to standards required by the Office of Professions and New York State Education Department.

Education:
Minimum Degree Required: Masters of Music in Music Therapy
Experience:
1-3 years of experience providing direct service in field of Music Therapy
Required License/ Registration/ Certification:
+ Is CPI certification required? Yes
+ Certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) as a “Board Certified Music Therapist” (MT-BC)
+ Licensed in New York State as a “Licensed Creative Arts Therapist” (LCAT)
+ Professional membership in the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA)
Physical Requirements :
+ Physical actions may include, but are not limited to; bending, kneeling, standing, squatting, reaching, printing, crawling, and running.
+ Physical actions: Bending, squatting, kneeling, standing, reaching, jumping, running
+ Must be able to carry therapy bag and/or instruments of 10-15 lbs.
+ Frequent sitting/ standing and when appropriate, floor sitting with pediatric patients.
+ Frequent floor sitting for extended periods during music therapy groups, frequent sitting/standing
+ Vision, speech, tactical and hearing senses adequate to perform job requirements.
+ Must have adequate vision, hearing, and speech senses to use singing voice and musical instruments in a clinical and musically proficient manner.
