Who are we?
FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.
How you will make an impact
The incumbent in this position provides health services to students according to physician standing orders, nursing clinical guidelines, Health Care Center (HCC) policies and procedures.
+ Provides direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse/Supervisor/Administrator of Allied Health Services. Care provided is within the scope of a Licensed Practical Nurse and takes into account the age specific competencies related to caring for a deaf, blind and special needs population of students ranging in age from 3 years to 22 years of age. Establishes a good rapport with students, treats them as individuals, and relates to them in an age-appropriate manner. Demonstrates positive alternatives to student’s inappropriate behaviors using self as a role model. Carries out assigned patient interventions as ordered. Administers medications and treatments and carries out assigned medication processing, distribution and monitoring, responsibilities within the scope of practical nursing practice and per HCC policy. Identifies basic health care needs, responds therapeutically in assisting students to meet health care needs. Identifies basic hygiene and activity of daily living needs. Assists students with personal hygiene and activities of daily living and provides age appropriate health care teaching to enable student to reach and maintain an appropriate level of self-care. Observes, reports and documents and communicates pertinent information about students in written and electronic form to parents, other nursing staff, physicians and interdepartmentally per policy. Supervises students to various areas within the HCC and escorts students to other areas of the health center and to other agencies as directed. Utilizes and maintains all record keeping systems such as medical charts, flow sheets, reports and intake forms. Collects health care data, utilizes and maintains health data information in health data management system.
+ Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment. Ensures that all student patients are always accounted for. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Understands and utilizes principles of asepsis in carrying out daily responsibilities. Recognizes environmental safety hazards and takes appropriate action.
+ Assists with overall function of the unit. Stocks supplies as assigned. Attends staff meetings and participates in decision making about problems and changes. Orients new LPNs to the HCC and shift routines.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of anatomy and physiology;
+ Knowledge of practical nursing principles, practices and techniques;
+ Knowledge of state and federal statutes regulating the practice of nursing;
+ Knowledge of safety measures and infection control principles;
+ Ability to successfully complete Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers;
+ Ability to identify emergency and crisis situations, triage and prioritize work tasks;
+ Ability to communicate expressively and receptively in an effective manner orally, manually, electronically and in written form with Deaf or Hard of Hearing, blind, special needs, hearing and /or sighted students, families and professionals;
+ Ability to maintain a Valid State of Florida Driver's License and meet FSDB requirements to operate a state vehicle according to the Transportation Policy;
+ Ability to learn and follow nursing, HCC, and FSDB policies and procedures;
+ Ability to maintain safety while providing a therapeutic environment for students;
+ Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI;
+ Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;
Qualifications
Licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27.
Sign Language Requirements:
Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain Intermediate proficiency in sign language, within four years of hire.
Please note: FSDB provides education to acquire sign language skills.
Hiring Salary Range:
10 month position: $27,502.80 - $32,002.80 annually (paid biweekly over 26-pays) This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.
Hours:
Monday - Friday from 5:00am to 1:30pm
