POSITION DETAILS DOC is seeking highly motivated individuals to deliver care for to our inmate population and assist them in their rehabilitation. You will work with a hardworking multidisciplinary team to deliver the highest level of care across a diverse population in our rare environment. You will have opportunities to care for a wide range of people and health concerns and gain invaluable experience while working in a dynamic highly varied work environment. These positions will work 16 hours per pay period on second or third shift and must work one weekend shift a month and one major holiday. It serves superior courts in Danielson, New London, Norwich and Windham. The York Correctional Institution is a high-security facility. It serves as the state's only institution for female offenders. It serves all superior courts in Connecticut and manages all pretrial and sentenced female offenders, whatever their security level. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state hospital or facility this class works on a daily or hourly basis; renders bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical and/or an intellectual disability in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES + Assists doctors and nurses in general care and treatment of individuals; + Measures doses and administers medications including insulin injections; + Documents medications using appropriate forms; + Performs narcotic counts; + Checks and may administer intravenous medications; + Reports changes in individuals to doctors; + Ensures restraints are applied correctly; + Transcribes doctors' medication orders; + Dispenses certain medications in doctors' absence; + Applies topical medication; + Takes and charts temperatures, pulses and respirations; + Performs simple nursing treatments; + Monitors general individual needs including personal hygiene; + Reports on individual condition and behavior; + Keeps unit safe and healthy; + Administers enemas or suppositories; + Performs foley catheterization care; + Orients individuals concerning medications and their use; + May perform emergency first aid; + May perform the full range of duties as described in class specifications for Mental Health Assistant 1 or 2; + Performs related duties as required. WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
