Job Description General Description The Workforce Education Center at LaGuardia Community College is seeking a Licensed Social Worker for its Train & Earn Program that provides comprehensive occupational and work readiness training for out-of-school and out-of-work (OSOW) youth (16-24) for entry into high growth occupations tied to in-demand sectors. LaGuardia’s training in high growth focus is in the health care arena: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (Basic), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)/Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and Central Service Technician. Upon completion of training, students will begin a 150-hour paid internship and sit for a certification exam. Job Placement is a required outcome after completion of the training and internship. This position reports to the Program Director of Train & Earn. Position Overview The Licensed Social Worker will focus on the mental health, well-being, and other supportive service needs of the students in the Train and Earn (T&E) Program. The Social Worker must aim to promote the well-being of students through the incorporation of social-emotional learning. This position is responsible for managing multiple students and their individual needs to ensure successful program completion. Duties and Responsibilities + Working closely with the Train & Earn Program Director to implement a coordinated effort of mental health services for the program students + Assessing program participants’ needs, situations, strengths and support networks to determine their goals + Providing students and family members with information about mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, trauma and substance abuse disorders + Working with program students to promote mental well-being through the incorporation of social emotional learning + Researching and referring participants to LaGuardia’s mental health resources if available; If not available within the College, then referring them to mental health community resources. + Interacting with public, private, city & state agencies to ensure that students who are referred to them are provided the services needed + Scheduling meetings and working closely with Train & Earn Case Managers to resolve issues that may arise in Case Manager sessions + Working with and assisting students who are in stressful and difficult situations to be able to complete training, participate in an internship and obtain employment upon completion of the training component + Collaborating and working closely with the Employment Specialist to ensure that internships are developed that meet the needs the students + Representing the Program/Center at meetings with the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development LaGuardia Community College Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. LaGuardia offers seventy-two associate degree and certificate programs, more than fifty non-degree workforce training programs, and dozens of ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 25,000 students. More than one-third of our degree-seeking students (35%) were born outside of the United States, coming to LaGuardia from 136 countries and speaking forty-three heritage languages. More than half (54 percent) are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent of LaGuardia degree students live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia degree students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent are Hispanic, well above the threshold of 25 percent required by the US Department of Education for designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia degree-seeking students receive some form of financial aid. Close to half of our degree-seeking students attend part-time (49%), usually because they need to work to support their families. Tuition and fees are $5,271 per year for a full-time student. Other Duties Qualifications Core Competencies/Qualifications + Strong writing, analytical, interpersonal, time management and communications’ skills required + Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented, active listener, critical thinker and dependable + Excellent computer skills and proven excellence with data management, process flow, and database tracking systems + Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and to effectively manage student case loads + Knowledge of social media + Must have proficiency with MS Office Suite including: Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Required Qualifications + Master’s degree required, certified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or a Licensed Master Social Worker. + Must have at least 3 years of successful and relevant supervisory experience working with out-of-school and out-of-work youth. + Must have experience in mental health counseling (e.g., trauma).
