Position Highlights + Pay: $20.00 - $21.00/ hour. No benefits. + DEEP will provide all training required to work as a lifeguard at the State Park beaches. Training time is paid! + Duration: Memorial Day Weekend (May 26th) through Labor Day (September 1st). + Schedule: Lifeguards work daily shifts from 10AM - 6PM, five days a week. July 4th is mandatory. Weekends and other holidays are preferred. The Division has proudly staffed lifeguards at many beaches across the state for over a century. The CT State Park Lifeguards are an elite squad of highly trained professionals that have kept millions of swimmers safe. Selection Plan Applicants are required to: + Be at least 16 years old and present proof of age. + Be able to pass training prerequisite skills and state issued certifications. + Be fluent in English. + Provide copies of any relevant certifications (CPR, first aid, lifeguard, EMR/EMT) if possessed. + Complete a pre-employment physical. Per USLA requirements, applicants must possess adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard as documented by a medical doctor, or the doctor’s designated physician’s assistant or ARNP. Applicants must be able to successfully complete the training prerequisite skills to work as a state park lifeguard before they can take the state issued training. All applicants will have two attempts to successfully complete the following skills: + Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. This swim is to be completed in 10 minutes or less. + Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. The head must remain above the surface of the water. + Complete the ‘underwater swim’ event by swimming an accumulation of 15 yards underwater, in a depth of at least 5ft, in a single breath. Submerge and swim underwater picking up an object from the bottom. Surface and repeat. + Complete a 1 mile run in 10 minutes or less. + Move a 165 pound object/person a distance of 25 yards. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the State of Connecticut this class is accountable for performing a full range of lifeguard services at swimming areas operated by state agencies. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES + Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers at State of Connecticut beaches, pools, lakes, institutions and hospitals; + Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas; + Maintains order in swimming areas; + Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required; + Instructs clients in water safety; + Lifts individuals with disabilities as required; + May give swimming instructions; + May work with individuals with disabilities; + May perform park maintenance tasks; + Performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY + Applicants must + demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques; + be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain Certification in the following: + life-saving from a national accredited organization (i.e., American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates, etc.); + cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the professional rescuer; + first aid. + Incumbents in this class may be required to travel. NOTE: At the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, incumbents in this class are not required to possess the above-mentioned certification at the time of hire. Incumbents will be provided national accredited training and certification prior to serving in this function.
