Morning hours may start at 5:00 a.m. We can be flexible with the amount of hours worked. This posting requires applicants to be at least 16 years of age or older. Under specified supervision, performs lifeguard duties and lifesaving procedures. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Lifeguard or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Lifeguard: Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Lifeguard series. Incumbents entering the class have limited related work experience and are expected to perform general life guarding duties. Lifeguard Instructor: Under direction, this is the journey-level class in the Lifeguard series. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform general life guarding duties as well as teach swim lessons for all levels. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Performs lifeguarding duties. Ensures the safety of guests by observing swimmers. Performs lifesaving procedures as necessary. Provides quality customer service; enforces policies, rules, and regulations; governs the conduct of patrons using the pools and/or facilities. Assists with accident prevention through enforcement of policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons using the pools and/or facilities. Assists in completing routine safety checks of pools, equipment and surrounding aquatic area in order to maintain safety and health standards. Assists in performing routine cleaning, maintenance and repairs of aquatic equipment. Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports. Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Assists with festivals and special events. Performs other duties as assigned. Lifeguard Instructor: In addition to the duties above: Instructs swim lessons; keeps accurate records of lessons being taught; distributes swimming lesson report cards to participants. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Must be at least 16 years of age to work at any facility. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Lifeguard: Ellis and Associates National Pool and Water Park Lifeguard certification , which includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires. Lifeguard Instructor: In addition to the above requirements: Must successfully pass IPAP training to teach swim lessons for levels Parent-Tot through Level 3 or possess a current swim instructor certification such as Red Cross, WSI or equivalent, or have one year of teaching experience for all levels. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of lifeguard processes and procedures. Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the city of Thornton and the department. Knowledge of swimming techniques. Skill in swimming 100 yards. Skill in performing lifesaving, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid activities. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Ability to work with the public. Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, or flexible schedules. Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures. Ability to provide quality customer service. Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations. Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences. Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures. Lifeguard Instructor: In addition to previous requirements: Skill in teaching all levels of swim lessons. Physical and Mental Requirements: While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and feel. This position is mostly: medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor conditions, extreme heat, noise, and atmospheric conditions. TESTING PROCEDURES Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
