Job Description

SUMMARY: 

Reporting to the Director of Performance Operations, the Lighting Supervisor works in collaboration with a full time Production Manager, Technical Director, and Production Engineer to provide professional support for performance activities across multiple venues at Montclair State University. The Lighting Supervisor provides supervision for the daily operation and upkeep of lighting equipment and installation of lighting systems into multiple performance facilities and related areas. This position also ensures the seamless, professional execution of dance, music, theater, opera, talks, presentations, and other live production events for presented artists, academic programs, campus partners, community entities, and rental clients within Montclair State University and the College of the Arts (CART).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain lighting systems in the CART performance venues.

Work closely with the Performance Operations Department in developing and maintaining technical manuals and procedures for the lighting systems in CART performance venues.

Research, identify, price, and propose equipment and capital needs for all performance venues; maintain lighting equipment vendor relations

Purchase, stock and distribute regularly used lighting supplies (i.e.: gaffers tape, tie line, stage lamps, spike tape, electrical tape, lighting gel, maintenance supplies, etc.).

Produce and update all light plots, instruments, channel hook up lists, and other lighting related documentation including Vectorworks, Lightwright, and EOS files.

Maintain facilities records for each CART performance venue including inventories, specifications, maintenance records, use records, safety/operational procedures, etc.

Participate in professional development activities and ongoing education to stay informed about current technology, trends and better practices in theatrical lighting systems.

Analyze technical riders and lighting plots from presented artists, academic units, campus events, rentals, and other stakeholders as needed.

Work with the production stakeholders to identify in-house production capabilities and suggest alternatives to technical requests as needed.

Oversee the integration of each production's physical lighting elements into the CART performance facilities through coordination with the Production Manager and other personnel related to each event.

Directly oversee and participate in the lighting hang, focus, and cueing for activities as assigned.

Work with designers, directors, and production management to manage and maximize the artistic impact of financial resources.

Assist professional lighting designers during the tech process, making suggestions and sharing ideas to solve problems, improve product, and facilitate changes; and offer guidance to student designers as requested by the academic units.

Serve as the Head Electrician, Light Board Programmer, and Light Board Operator for events and shows as assigned. Serve as the Lighting Designer for select events and university activities as assigned.

Coordinate the training and safe use of specialized facilities’ lighting systems with production personnel.

Operate fly rail, sound playback, and set up and operation of other equipment to assist the Production Operations department on an as needed basis.

Assist the Director of Performance Operations with season planning and budgeting as it relates to the lighting needs of the facilities and productions.

Manage Performance Operations credit card and submit paperwork and reconciliations for purchases.

Work with colleagues in the Performance Operations Department to manage, augment, and diversify freelance labor pool while advising on effective staffing and scheduling for lighting-related needs on a production-by-production basis.

Work with colleagues in CART Performance Operations to create and foster a positive and collaborative work environment throughout all performance facilities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Minimum of three years of experience working as a Lighting Supervisor, Head Electrician, or similar role at professional dance, music, theater, events organization.

Demonstrated excellence in the execution of theatrical and event lighting installation and execution for production related activities.

Demonstrated ability to design, bid, install, and execute systems designs and upgrades with a focus on creating an inventory of shared resources across multiple venues.

Proficiency with Lightwright, Vectorworks, Google Suite, FileMaker Pro-Spot On; Moving Light Assistant, and an ability to learn new software systems as needed.

Proficiency in EOS lighting systems and console programming, including moving lights.

Basic working knowledge of networking.

Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, hang, cable, and focus lighting instruments.

Solid understanding of proper safety protocols for productions and events following OSHA and general standard building codes.

Ability to work a varying schedule, including nights and weekends.

Strong ability to self-direct and work both independently and as a team lead.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience working in a college or university theatrical venue.

PREFERRED:

Working knowledge of production related programs and protocols including CRESTRON, OSC, DMX, QLab, Dante, ArtNET, and/or AutoCAD.

Ability to adapt lighting for video and television productions and work with professional and student camera crews.

Ability to bench test and maintain moving light and other automated equipment.

Aerial manlift certification.

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and make decisions under pressure.

Demonstrated ability to adjust goals and objectives as directed by immediate supervisor.

Demonstrated ability to work with professional, community, and academic constituencies.

Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise teams with varied experience and skill levels to effectively produce professional quality work.

Ability to thrive in a team-based environment.
