Overview

The Lightning Direct Effects Certification Engineer will be the focal for design, qualification, and certification activities related to direct effects lightning compliance across all of engineering, including grounding, static, and lightning zone identification.  This role will serve as the internal Subject Matter Expert as well as the primary external point of contact with regulatory agencies and industry standards groups for aircraft structures, systems, and equipment level Lightning considerations. The most important traits at Joby  are a positive attitude towards the project, strong work ethic, and being able to self-manage and learn new skills. Forward thinking and the ability to adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment are a must. It is preferred that this individual be an FAA DER or candidate. 

Responsibilities Determining and interpreting the certification basis and establishing the compliance strategy – including means and methods of complianceDeveloping, reviewing, and approving certification-related documents, including Issue Papers, Special Conditions, Equivalent Levels of Safety, etc.Certification Plans and SummariesTest Plans and ReportsDesign and Analysis ReportsRequests for Conformity, Statements of ComplianceWorking with and mentoring multiple engineering teams with a mix of aerospace and non-aerospace backgrounds toEstablish relevant design development and certification plans that will support Type CertificationConvey and document requirements in a way that clearly breaks down the regulations and guidance materialDevelop engineering specifications for lightning protection and bonding of the  airframeReview designs, develop solutions, and ensure compliance with the airworthiness standardsPlanning out test campaigns, overseeing test article fabrication, and witnessing tests in order to demonstrate that applicable designs show compliance with airworthiness standardsInterfacing with certification authorities as required (FAA, EASA, etc.) Required Expert-level understanding of design standards and verification methods for HIRF and lightning protection of aircraft, static dissipation, and electromagnetic interference and compatibilityPrevious experience with direct effects of lightning, HIRF, and Indirect effects of lightning aspects of aircraft certificationExperience and understanding of RTCA/DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment – specifically sections related to induced signals, radio frequencies, lightning, and electrostatic dischargeThe ability to question traditional assumptions in the application of regulations, guidance material, and engineering specificationsThe ability to read, review, and create technical schematics, engineering specifications, and engineering drawingsAt least 10 years of relevant aviation or aerospace industry experienceA Bachelor of Science in an applicable engineering disciplineProficient in EnglishProficient with Microsoft Office products Desired An FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) – Structures and/or Systems and Equipment (Electrical Equipment) with lightning direct effects authorizationWhole-aircraft FAA certification program experience, Part 23 and/or Part 27 experience preferredExperience with carbon fiber composite airframesExperience in testing including instrumenting, data acquisition, and documenting and analyzing resultsExperience and involvement with industry groups to develop consensus standardsFamiliar with Dassault Systèmes engineering and management tools

 

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $97,500 - $213,900/yr. The compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
