Linux System Administrator (IT Sr Associate 3) - Provisional **GENERAL DUTIES** I.T. Senior Associates perform highly complex professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Senior Associates perform a range of work in development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include diagnosing, evaluating, overseeing and resolving highly complex projects. They have wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may serve in lead roles on complex programs or projects, and/or serve as a direct supervisor of a unit or group. I.T. Senior Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines, decision-making ability in situations related to those disciplines, and be able to serve as a resource in these areas. The full specification is available on our web site at http://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/hr/classified-civil-service/ccsjobs/ **CONTRACT TITLE** IT Senior Associate **FLSA** Exempt **CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION** The Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) supports the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 26 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications and identifies and develops new technologies that advance the University's core mission. CIS operates and maintains the University's network, the enterprise Data Center, and the CUNY Service Desk, manages the processes of safeguarding the University’s IT assets, and maintains the security posture by operating the CUNY Security Operations Center (SOC). Additionally, CIS develops disaster recovery plans for business continuity, supports the CUNYfirst Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that integrates student administration, financial management, and human resources operations across CUNY’s 26 colleges. Lastly, CIS provides strategic and operational IT leadership to all CUNY campuses. Reporting to the Director of DevSecOps, the Linux System Administrator will manage and maintain Linux-based systems integral to the University’s modernized network infrastructure, overseeing initiatives to enhance efficiency, security and reliability such as Network Automations and Centralized Management, CUNY Private Cloud server workload consolidation, and Telephony Services Consolidation. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: + Ensures conformance of highly critical installations, configurations, and maintenance of Linux operating systems (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.). + Administers and supports Linux servers, including user management, file system management, performance tuning, and security hardening. + Continuously monitors system performance using tools like Nagios, Prometheus, or Zabbix, identifying issues and tuning systems for optimal performance; ensures security patches and updates are regularly applied to mitigate vulnerabilities. + Oversees critical implementation and maintenance of backup and disaster recovery strategies using tools such as Veeam, rsync, or Bacula. + Develops and maintains scripts using Bash, Python, or Ansible to automate routine tasks such as backups, system monitoring, and performance tuning, improving efficiency and reducing manual effort. + Administers user accounts, permissions, and access controls to ensure security and compliance with internal policies; configures LDAP or Active Directory for user authentication and directory services. + Administers and configures local and network-attached storage (NFS, SAN, iSCSI, etc.), and manages file systems, and monitors disk space usage. + Oversees the troubleshooting and resolutions of systems and application issues in a timely manner. + Manages deployment of operating system patches, updates and upgrades to maintain security compliance and system performance, using tools like Yum, APT, or Ansible. + Implements security measures to protect systems from unauthorized access, including firewall management (iptables, firewalld), SELinux, auditing, and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS); monitors and responds to security incidents and vulnerabilities. + Works closely with networking, database, and application development teams to ensure systems are running efficiently and securely; provides support for deploying applications and services in Linux environments. + Maintains thorough documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting processes; ensures compliance with organizational standards and policies. NOTES: 1. Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. 2. **An appointment to this Competitive title/position in the Classified Civil Service Title Series will be made with a Provisional status. Employees in provisional status must pass a competitive civil service examination and be appointed from a civil service list to remain in the title/position.** **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** 1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent 2. An equivalent of ten years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: ten years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus eight years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus six years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position 3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency 4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions. This title has three levels. In addition to the minimum qualifications above, To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required. **OTHER QUALIFICATIONS** Preferred: + 6+ years of experience managing and administering Linux systems (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.) + Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash, Python, or Perl) for automating system administration tasks + Strong understanding of Linux system security, user management, and access control + Experience with: + virtualization and cloud technologies such as VMware, AWS, or Azure + configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef + version control systems such as Git + containerization technologies like Docker or Kubernetes are a plus + Strong knowledge of networking protocols and services (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPN) + Familiarity with backup solutions and disaster recovery planning + Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with strong communication and problem- solving skills **COMPENSATION** **Level 1** : $101,762 **Level 2** : $111,013 **Level 3** : $122,116 - $130,000 **BENEFITS** CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification.
