Linux Systems Administration Specialist

Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where “dream teams” of world- class researchers work alongside experts from industry, academia, and other government laboratories to address vital national challenges in clean energy, environment, technology, and national security.

Our Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) division is seeking an experienced Linux System Administrator to join their team.

In this role you can expect to:

Participate in the design, development, and advancement of the high-performance computing (HPC) environment of the ALCF.Assist with implementation, management, and administration of experimental and production networks.Contribute ideas to the design and development of new systems and network tools.Receive on-the-job training and experience with High Performance Computing.Work in a hybrid environment with 2+ days onsite in Lemont, Illinois; with the ability to work fully onsite if preferred by the applicant.

Position Requirements

Required skills and qualifications:

Knowledge and expertise in Linux systems administrationExperience with installation, management, and use of software such as compilers, resource managers, and web applicationsKnowledge and experience in technologies such as TCP/IP and related protocols; networked file systems, including NFSKnowledge of system administration tools, and languages, such as Ruby, Python, C, and shell scriptingExperience with configuration management technologies, such as SaltStack and AnsibleEffective problem solving skillsAbility to work effectively as a member of a teamFlexibility in handling assignments and working on several projects simultaneouslyKnowledge and understanding of how to safely operate within a datacenter, including tasks such as mounting and unmounting server hardwareAbility to handle physical labor of installing racks and servers in a datacenterAbility to lift up to 20 pounds independently and upwards with additional help from othersAbility to model Argonne’s core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

Knowledge of or experience with Java, such as in support of systems like Jenkins, Kafka, or SparkKnowledge of parallel and distributed file systems such as Lustre or GPFS, and their associated hardwareKnowledge of HPC networking technologies such as Infiniband and SlingshotUnderstanding of MPI, and implementationsAbility to gather site requirements and represent them to design and development teams to find appropriate solutions across multiple sitesAbility to communicate and present ideas, status, design concepts, technical and user documentation, and decision analysis

This position can be hired at one of two levels, and the requirements for each are as follows:   

PT2: Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent 

PT3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent
