Locomotive Engineer/Conductor

This is a union position.  Pay rate of $34.19

Performs any combination of the following duties on railroad equipment withing the confines of the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay and/or as directed by the proper authority.  Receives instructions for train moves from supervisor and completes trip report upon completion of all moves.  Supervises and coordinates activities of other crew members engaged in moving of train and/or spotting of cars.  Operates switching locomotive and other railroad equipment within the confines of the Base and/or as directed by the proper authority.  Moves railroad cars to designated location(s) and spots cars in a confined area withing 3/4 of an inch for proper off-loading.  Observes track to detect obstructions.  Inspects equipment such as couplings, air hose, journal boxes, and handbrake to ensure that equipment will function properly.  Makes minor adjustments/repairs to couplings, air hoses, and journal boxes using necessary hand tools.  Pull or pushes track switches to reroute train/cars to proper location.  Ensures that handbrake is set before leaving a car or released before attempting to remove a car.  Sets warning signals such as flares, flags, lanterns, in front and at rear of train during emergencies.  Must be familiar with all signals used to drive locomotive backwards or forwards to switch, couple, and uncouple cars.  Flags crossings as appropriate.  Responsible for cleanliness and operator level maintenance of assigned locomotives and other railroad equipment.  Prepares accident or incident reports as directed.  May be required to work all hours of the day or night.  Will perform other related duties as assigned by manager.
