Locomotive Engineer (Motor Vehicle Operator)

About the Position: This position is located in the 407th Army Field Support Brigade, Fort Cavazos, TX. Responsibilities Operate one or more diesel electric locomotives to move a variety of sizes, weights and number of railroad cars containing hazardous cargo. Follow railroad and locomotive safety rules and procedures to operate under adverse weather conditions and/or poor visibility. Perform routine maintenance and repairs to railroad box cars, flat cars, and locomotives. Perform coupling and uncoupling operations involved in making and breaking up trains. Receive and relay messages to the crew for placement of train cars. Plan the best sequence of arranging, picking up and setting out train cars. Check engines, brakes, warning devices, reversing lever, sander, air, oil, electrical and temperature gauges for proper operation. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Locomotive Engineer (Motor Vehicle Operator)~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to control the proper speed of locomotive to anticipate early braking or accelerating, maintaining watch over assigned area of equipment to check for malfunctioning equipment, and using special precautions while operating locomotive during bad weather to prevent emergency situations. I have the ability to follow railroad signaling, railroad safety rules and procedures. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability as a Mobile Equipment Operator Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL: - Work is performed from a sitting or standing position and requires constant use of hands and arms in starting, stopping, and breaking. Operates the locomotive through numerous traffic crossings. Locomotive operation requires ability for very close eye, hand manipulation while regulating a variety of levers and locomotive controls while watching and interpreting signals and verbal instructions of a railroad conductor or brakeman. Position requires infrequent heavy lifting (45 LBS) of access ways and covers on the locomotive during operational check of batteries, electrical assembly's brakes, etc., and when unloading of sand to rail sander. Must be able to climb up and down steep steps or ladders to board and leave trains. WORKNG CONDITIONS:- Work is performed in varying weather conditions and subject to exposure to rain and freezing conditions. Subject to dust and fumes. Work is primarily performed within the enclosed locomotive cab with the requirement to operate with side windows open during more inclement weather conditions for visibility reasons. Ear and eye protective devices and safety toed shoes will be worn at all times of actual exposure to hazardous conditions. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
