The Locomotive Operator is responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services. Working in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment, the operator must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety.

**Education / Training:**

• 1-2 years Locomotive Operator experience, preferred.

**Key Job Elements:**
• Keep the interior of locomotive safe, clean, and tidy:
• Apply rules, special instructions, and switching procedures including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling railcars, managing air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes;
• Provide protection of train, track, and equipment;
• Perform equipment inspections and air brake tests;
• Comply with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Progress Rail; practicing and promoting safe work habits.
• Using relevant information and individual judgement to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards;
• Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems with supervisor and manager;
• Ability to train others in safe and efficient operation of Locomotive.
**Qualifications and Experience:**
• Mechanical aptitude;
• Welding experience, a plus;
• Read precision instruments and gauges;
• Read and understand technical drawings and blueprints;
• Ability to work outside in all weather conditions;
• Ability to follow safety and procedural rules.
• Strength – Able to lift/carry/pull up to 50 lbs. without assistance; ability to pull self-up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches;
• Motion – Good manual dexterity, constant standing and walking, frequent bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching, climbing ladders;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Good visual/distance skills, high noise levels (above 85 decibels);
• Work Environment – Work in all weather conditions; Work on varied surfaces (concrete floors, gravel, and rail car floors), constant holding ladder and riding on side of moving equipment, work within close proximity to moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places; work around and operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment;
• Emotional Demands – Employee is expected to work and cooperate as part of team in order to meet production requirements;
• Safety – Position is safety sensitive, as it requires working in and around live tracks. Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e. blue flag) and use of all PPE.
