LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) — General Surgery Unit

Lutheran Hospital’s 5D Unit cares for a variety of post-operative patients in the areas of orthopaedics, spine, neurology and bariatrics. Some procedures patients have undergone include total joint replacements, lumbar and/or cervical decompressions, fusions, and laminectomies. This unit also treats general med/surg patients and can telemetry and ongoing cardiac monitoring. The exceptional care from the nursing team on this unit has led to a reputation for quick patient turnover and excellent patient education. This is an excellent opportunity for an RN to join a team that is active in shared governance, is involved in community outreach, and has created a highly engaged work environment.  


A caregiver in this position works Nights, from 7:00pm—7:30am or 11:00pm—7:30am.  


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Provide direct nursing care in accordance with established healthcare organization policies, procedures, and protocols. Implements and monitors patient care plans. 

Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate. 

Monitor and document patient's condition and effectiveness and timeliness of care and/or interventions. 

Evaluate, update, and revise plan of care to facilitate achievement of planned and expected outcomes. 

Serve as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care. 

Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing protocol. 

Note and carry out physician and nursing orders. 

Assess and coordinate patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team. 

Assess the educational needs of the patient and significant others considering cultural issues and other special concerns. 

Provide teaching and educational material as appropriate. 

Validate and document patient and family understanding of teaching. 

Maintain professional growth and development through ongoing formal and informal education and clinical nursing study. 

 
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing. 

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure and current registration in the State of Ohio. 

For specific areas, must be certified in medication administration and IV therapy as approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing. 

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one year of service. 

The Licensed Practical Nurse must have a minimum of one year clinical experience within the previous three years  

OR must have graduated within the previous six months of hire.

Physical Requirements:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
