PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to provide clinical support of patient care, under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Provide patient and family teaching and work cooperatively in maintaining standards of care within the framework of the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
In addition, the LPN will create an accurate and thorough registration for emergency department visits. Secure appropriate signatures, financial information and documents for treatment and billing purposes. Interact in a customer-focused and compassionate manner to ensure patients’ and their representatives’ needs are met, and that they understand the hospital’s policies as it relates to professional, efficient, and quality customer services.
LPN RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:
Perform clerical duties as assigned Provide prompt customer service. Adhere to infection control policy/procedures. Perform phlebotomy according to policy. Administers oral, IM, SQ medications as directed by the physician. Assists physician with patient exams and procedures. Collects and labels specimens correctly according to policy Prioritizes daily tasks. Exhibits flexibility with willingness to work any schedule as indicated. Performs quality controls daily, if applicable. Provides appropriate documentation in patient’s chart. Reinforces/facilitates education. Notifies appropriate personnel immediately of abnormal test results. Completes annual required competency and education. Performs any other duties as assigned Seeks supervisory guidance/approval as appropriate. Portrays professional image: follows dress code; communicates with internal and external customers in a professional manner, including appropriate verbal and written grammar. Demonstrates strong organizational skillsRegistration and Account Creation
Accurately and thoroughly collects, analyzes, and records demographic, insurance, financial, and clinical data in computer system. Ensures information source is appropriate during bedside registration. Enters patients into the patient tracking system upon arrival by perform a quick registration during triage if applicable. Obtains information and completes Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire and other payer-specific documents as required such as First Report of Injury (FROI). Contacts Aultworks for workman’s compensation patients. Reviews and explains all registration forms prior to obtaining signatures from patient or appropriate patient representative. Prints patient’s identification band for nursing staff. Records patient account information on necessary documents and/or breaks down charts and attachments per procedure. Documents system with activity comments to ensure appropriate account follow-up. Updates departed patients in system by reviewing dictation and recording attending physician. Captures correct primary care physician Records patient e-mail address when available for enrollment to patient portal and/or applicable surveys.Financial Activities
Initiates electronic inquiries to payers and obtains eligibility and benefit information. Ensures accuracy of patient data with electronic inquires as it relates to addresses. Assesses patient liability at time of service in respects to coordination of benefits of insurance payers. Provides patients with financial assistance applications per department guidelines.Administrative Clerical Duties
Ensures patient tracking systems are updated with patient activity. Performs formal discharge of patients, including system documentation. Answers phones and routes calls as necessary. QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Diploma from approved program of practical nursing. Current licensure to practice as a licensed practical nurse in the State of Ohio Prefer minimally one-year experience in a hospital, medical office/clinic, or insurance company Must have current BLS ACLS required within 90 days of hire PALS required within 90 days of hire Demonstrates proficiency in basic nursing care, knowledge, and skills. IV certified/ obtain within 12 months of hire. Demonstrates ability to understand and utilize computer systems. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Function independently, have flexibility, and ability to work with all levels of personnel. Demonstrates professional conduct in the clinical setting.WORKING CONDITIONS:
Lunch and break periods must be coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate staffing during departmental operating hours. Sitting/standing/moving about intermittently during working hours. Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day. Physical requirements may be but not limited to standing, walking, bending, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Will work under the direction of the RN Computer use on a daily basis.
