Job Description Summary:

Responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of medical provider. Under the general clinically supervision of medical provider and administrative supervision of the Practice Manager. Employee is responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age specific needs. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision. Duties include checking schedules; organizing patient flow accompanying patients to exam/ procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing exam room/ setting up instruments etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings/ lab test per Medical Provider’s orders; assisting Medical Provider/ other nursing staff with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/ family; answering telephone calls and providing pertinent information.   Administers medications and treatments within scope of practice, prepares for surgery and assists providers with procedures with procedures and examinations according to policy. prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations. According to policy.Initiate peripheral IV access and administer IV flushes and IVPBs to [patients according to policy. Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.Must successfully complete a formal 40-hour intravenous therapy training competency program through Nurse Education after six months of employment with the hospital or provide 40-hour certificate from employment with previous hospital before being allowed to administer IV push medications.Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate.Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan.Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider.Documents care in patient’s record.Fulfills environmental duties to include cleaning exam/procedure room instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; sterilize any equipment or instruments according to scheduled maintenance program; keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/ procedure rooms.Fulfills organizational duties to include respecting and promoting patient rights; following all Clinic Policies and Procedures and System wide policies.Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients.Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the clinic.Performs preceptor duties to new employees to provide needed guidance during orientation.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Completion of a vocational school LPN program.Completion of a formal (school or agency) intravenous therapy-training program.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.

EXPERIENCE:

Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class, pharmacology exam, and skills exam. Must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse and must have attended a formal IV push medication training program prior to administering IV push medications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Skill and proficiency in the technical field of practical nursing as normally acquired through completion of a vocational school LPN program.Basic computer skills preferred
