Machine Learning Engineer
What You'll Do Join our dynamic team as an Engineer specializing in AI & Machine Learning, where you'll contribute to pioneering projects in computer vision and natural language processing under the document intelligence space. This role is crucial for automating workflows and enhancing the efficiency of partner teams at Avalara. Your responsibilities will encompass the full lifecycle of machine learning model development—from conceptualization and data pre-processing to model training, evaluation, and deployment. This position demands a blend of technical prowess in the field of machine learning and a deep-seated understanding of software development practices where you'll work closely with a cross-functional team that includes tax experts, data scientists, and software developers to ensure our systems are performant and accurate. Develop and deploy machine learning models focusing on document intelligence primarily revolving around document entity extraction, document classification and object detection. Conduct in-depth analysis, feature engineering and optimization to improve model performance. Make informed data-driven decisions by interpreting test results and performance metrics to help steer experimental efforts Follow best practices and established standards for the development and deployment of REST APIs, ensuring seamless integration and functionality. Build on top of the foundational MLOps framework to manage model serving, dataset versioning, and lifecycle processes. Leverage best practices in software development, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) along with appropriate functional and unit testing in place. Write, review, and maintain high-quality code that meets industry standards, contributing to the project's technical excellence. Lead code review sessions, ensuring good code quality and documentation. Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, test, and deploy integrations. What You'll Need to be Successful Demonstrated prowess in machine learning, with a particular focus on document processing applications in real-world scenarios. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with capability to navigate complexities with the data and systems. Drive innovation by researching and applying the latest technologies and methodologies in machine learning and software development. Proficiency in developing and debugging software with a preference for Python, though familiarity with additional programming languages is highly valued and encouraged. Strong collaboration and communication skills, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams. Desirable Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning. A Master’s degree is a plus. 5+ years of experience in software development within production environments, along with experience in building machine learning models. Proficiency working in cloud computing environments, machine learning frameworks, and software development best practices Demonstrated ability to keep up with technological advancements and apply them in a fast-paced work environment. Familiarity with algorithms, and data structures. Good analytical, design and debugging skills.
