Machine Safety Engineer
Overview This role is positioned in the Global Foods R&D organization as part of the Environmental, Health and Safety team supporting our Plano R&D team and our TPC team in Dallas, Texas. This role is responsible for leading our Machine Safety agenda which requires a solid foundation in engineering, knowledge of regulations and standards as well as demonstration of leading complex safety design and remediation. As part of the EHS team, this role will also support PepsiCo R&D on the Management of Change process for all new or modified equipment to ensure compliance to PepsiCo’s safety standards. Given our fast-paced environment, the scope of this role will include management of 3rd party contractors to ensure risk assessments, remediation and validation of equipment is completed and properly documented. Come build deep knowledge in machine safety, partnering with engineers and scientists on new technology to support innovation within PepsiCo R&D. This role is based out of our Plano, TX HQ - *Domestic Relocation Assitance is available for this role Responsibilities Lead PepsiCo Foods R&D Machine Safety agenda including short- & long-term approaches for new equipment and existing legacy equipment. This includes ownership for PepsiCo MESS standard. Partner to support as a Subject Matter Expert the Management of Change process for all new, moved or to be modified process equipment. Partner/collaborate with EHS & project team to set machinery safety prioritization agendas which meet project timelines and necessary legacy equipment modifications. Perform inspections based on information provided to identify machine safety hazards and confirm appropriate completion of risk assessments for all new/modified equipment. Partner to support as a Subject Matter expert the Hazardous Energy program. Build technical knowledge and expertise in Process Safety fitting our core & transform capabilities needs growing as a subject matter expert for Global R&D. Lead 5-year strategy Capital Plan and manage the annual operating budget for Machine Safety. Serve as the central point of contact for contractors hired to complete Machine Safety activities such as risk assessments, remediation, and validation. Participate in all risk and design reviews. Leverage technical background to recommend risk reduction measures and corrective actions; manage through implemented solution and validation. Serve as consultant/liaison for vendors and equipment manufacturers ensuring consistency and adherence to PepsiCo safety standards for all R&D led programs. Provide technical consultation as R&D SME on Machine Safety to Global R&D. Educate and mentor others in our R&D Foods locations to deliver project success. Develop strategy to manage our legacy equipment challenges, including innovative and cost-competitive solutions to complex opportunities which meet PepsiCo standards. Develop training materials and conduct technical seminars to elevate knowledge across R&D Represent R&D in appropriate related cross-functional and industry forums. Continue education as necessary to maintain expertise in machinery safety design, build process safety knowledge and understand government regulations (OSHA/EN-ISO) and consensus standards (ANSI/NFPA). Strive to complete CMSE® - Certified Machinery Safety Expert if not completed. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering 5+ years of demonstrated Machine Safety experience Demonstrated knowledge and experience in electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulics. Functional Safety certification (CMSE, CFSE, TUV FSExp, ISA SIS Expert) Preferred Requirements: Controls engineering experience including knowledge of Safety PLCs. Desire for certified electrician Advanced knowledge regarding regulations and standards including: OSHA 29 CFR 1910, Subpart O, including: OSHA 1910.212 & OSHA 1910.219 ANSI B11.19 - Performance Requirements for Risk Reduction Measures ANSI B11.0 - Safety of Machinery NFPA 79 (Chapters 9 and 10) ANSI/RIA R15.06, if/as applicable Understanding of the limits and interfaces between manufacturer and operator’s responsibilities and obligations. Strong understanding of occupational health and safety regarding the environment and human behavior.
