Summary Description:

·         Reporting to the Department Manager, the Maintenance Apprentice works under the guidance of experienced maintenance technicians to develop hands-on skills in servicing and troubleshooting a wide range of beverage manufacturing and packaging equipment. This includes hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, conveyor systems, and PLC operations.

 

Essential Job Functions:

·         Adhere to all health and safety policies/procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) while in the warehouse or production areas (including but not limited to hairnets/beard nets, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard toe and slip/oil resistant shoes, appropriate safety gloves, and seatbelts while operating forklifts).

·         Responsible to adhere to food quality and food safety as per the standard(s) provided by corporate, customer, and/or governing bodies (ex. SQF). 

·         Assist maintenance technicians in performing routine maintenance tasks, including inspections, lubrication, and adjustments on production machinery and equipment.

·         Learn to troubleshoot, repair, or maintain the operating condition of industrial production or processing machinery or equipment, including inspection, assembly, disassembly, and replacement as necessary.

·         Assist with installation, setup, and calibration of equipment, tools and utility systems to minimize manufacturing downtime and assist with the completion of all required paperwork and documentation in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

·         Participate in preventive maintenance programs to ensure the reliability and uptime of equipment and systems.

·         Learn to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams to understand equipment operation and repair procedures.

·         Assist in maintaining inventory levels of spare parts and supplies needed for equipment maintenance and repair activities. 

·         Follow established safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

·         Participate in training and developing programs to expand knowledge and skills in maintenance techniques, equipment operation, and safety practices.

·         Maintain the required grades and pass all courses with the minimum percentage score.

·         Assist maintenance technicians in responding to equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs to minimize production downtime.

·         Learn basic welding, cutting, and fabrication techniques to assist with repairs and modifications to equipment and structures.

·         Participate in troubleshooting and diagnosing recurring equipment issues to help identify long-term solutions.

·         Learn how to use diagnostic tools and software to track machine performance and identify potential failures before they occur.

·         Help with general facility maintenance tasks, such as repairing lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems that support manufacturing operations.

·         Assist in implementing and maintaining energy conservation programs, such as optimizing compressed air usage or improving motor efficiency.

·         Ensure work areas, maintenance shop, and equipment are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards to support a safe and efficient work environment.

·         Participate in initiatives aimed at improving machine efficiency, reliability, and overall plant performance.

 

Required Skills:

·         Basic mechanical knowledge of industrial machinery and equipment.

·         Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

·         Basic electrical knowledge, including wiring, circuits, and troubleshooting.

·         Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.

·         Understanding of lubrication principles and preventive maintenance techniques.

·         Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mechanical and electrical issues.

·         Knowledge of safety procedures and best practices in an industrial setting.

·         Willingness to learn about PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and automation systems.

·         Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, and using maintenance software (CMMS).

Education and Experience:

·         High School diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational training in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance preferred.

·         Basic understanding of mechanical principles, electrical circuits, and pneumatics systems.

 

Working Conditions:

·         Work Environment: Operating in a fast-paced production plant with numerous moving parts.  Noise levels require hearing protection and temperatures can get very hot and/or relatively cold). The environment is structured and supervised. 

·         Visual/Sensory-This position requires regular need to give moderate attention with one or two senses at a time.
