Hourly Hiring Range: $19.58
Workdays/Hours: Monday-Friday; hours vary between 6:30am-3:00pm (some evenings/weekends required)

This class is a semi-skilled position devoted to park maintenance services throughout the City of Durham park system, including the maintenance of outdoor parks, trails, and recreation facilities. Performs standardized work following prescribed procedures and instructions, requiring minimal prior training or experience. There is an established and specified routine to be followed and limited decision-making, restricted to choosing and safely using the proper work tools. Responsible for cleaning facilities and/or equipment; performing basic maintenance of equipment, grounds, and facilities; performing manual labor; assisting with projects that require semi-skilled labor; providing customer service; and keeping records and reporting maintenance needs to higher authority that fall outside of the scope of the work assigned.
Primary responsibilities for incumbents assigned to outdoor parks will include mowing, trimming, edging, weed and brush control, removal of trash and debris, blowing and cleaning of hard surfaces, shelters and courts, and cleaning of park restrooms. Responsibilities include providing parks and grounds cleanup and event setup services on weekends and as needed.
Primary responsibilities for incumbents assigned to indoor recreation facilities will include performing janitorial, housekeeping, and custodial duties; cleaning and maintaining floors and other indoor and outdoor areas; emptying trash, dusting, sanitizing bathrooms, cleaning mirrors and windows, replenishing sanitation items, pressure washing assigned areas; setting up and tearing down equipment for rentals, special events; and opening/closing facilities, as assigned. Completes special projects as assigned including vegetation management, storm cleanup, and athletic field maintenance.
Note: Selected candidates who begin employment before May 5, 2025 will be eligible for the City's benefits package for employees working 30 hours per week or more, including Health Insurance and Retirement contributions. Candidates hired on or after May 5, 2025 will take the position as Seasonal employees and will not receive benefits. Duties/Responsibilities
+ Performs basic maintenance of equipment including inspecting equipment; resolves basic equipment issues, including performing minor fixture and other repairs, basic installations, and basic plumbing, painting, and carpentry duties; reports more complex repair issues to higher-level staff; and operates small equipment and tools.
+ Performs manual and semi-skilled labor; assists with painting, repairing, and replacing floors, and with mixing and pouring concrete; transports, unloads, and carries materials.
+ Provides customer service by responding to customer questions and concerns and providing information on established policies and procedures.
+ Maintains records; performs data entry; generates work orders; performs inventory check; recommends supply orders; and picks up or delivers supplies.
+ Performs weekend work and special projects such as playground installations.
+ Observes necessary safety precautions and follows appropriate procedures.
+ Loads and unloads equipment and materials, secures equipment on trailers, maintains, and fuels equipment, and verifies trucks are stocked with all necessary supplies.
+ Performs mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, and cleanup of all assigned parks, restrooms, and shelters to adopted maintenance standards. · Removes brush, limbs, and debris, cleans storm drains, sprays weeds, removes silt and dirt from walks.
+ Completes assigned work orders.
+ Sets up and tears down equipment for rentals and special events, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
-Maintenance work, light carpentry, painting, and operation of small engine equipment.
-Athletic turf maintenance (when assigned to outdoor parks).
-Knowledge of cleaning, stripping, and waxing commercial floors (when assigned to indoor recreation facilities).
-Ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines.
SKILL IN:
-Safely and properly operating professional maintenance equipment. May include professional cleaning equipment, operating commercial mowers, trimmers, blowers, edgers, and trucks.
-Driving and backing landscape trailers.
-Working in inclement weather.
-Working outdoors in a fast-paced, physically challenging environment.
-Exercising a positive attitude, work ethic, and good judgment.
-Adjusting to a variety of different assignments daily.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience
+ Requires the ability to read, write and follow directions.
+ Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
+ 1 year of experience in commercial mowing and landscaping.
Additional Preferred Skills
+ A minimum of one (1) year experience in semi-skilled manual labor (i.e. mowing, weedeating, etc.).
+ Experience operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment such as Zero Turn Riding mowers.
+ W illing to work a flex schedule (evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
+ W illing to work in inclement weather (rainy, snowy, ice, hot/cold, etc.
+ Able to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and understand the routine operation of machine.
