A Brief Summary of This Position

The Maintenance Manager position reports directly to the Plant Manager for Utility Bartow. The Maintenance Manager oversees the implementation of all plant improvement projects and ensures that all plant, property and equipment are kept in excellent working condition. Additionally, this person is also responsible for supporting site leadership in the accomplishment of the plant’s safety mission and objectives. This individual must have a passion for continuous improvement of facilities, equipment and safety. This position functions as the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Bartow Utility plant with proficiency.

Develop and maintain preventative maintenance program that minimizes down timeExecute safety objectives so as to continually improve the plants ISRS ratingMinimize MRO supply costEnsure necessary maintenance supply items are immediately availableMake recommendations for capital expenditures to optimize the benefits from expenditures for personnel, materials, and equipmentOversee the implementation of plant improvement projectsSelect, develop, and motivate employees ensuring fair and consistent treatment within applicable laws, policies and EEO guidelines to maintain continuity of a competent work forceWork with outside contractors taking bids and explaining requirements for work to be performed within the plant and conduct final inspection of that workSupervise and schedule maintenance team to provide services for required shifts when applicableCollaborate with Operations Management to improve production process and productivity

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experienceThe ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions in EnglishProficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and OutlookCommunicate problems or needs to departmental supervisionCommunicate and interact with coworkers in a professional  mannerPay attention to detail and follow work instructionsHigh awareness for safety with the ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a non-temperature controlled environment, as well as with exposure to outdoorsAbility to lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 30 poundsAbility to be company trained and authorized to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms and bridge cranes in arc flash safety, confined space entry, hazardous energy control and fall protectionAbility to spend 75% of workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbingClimb and work from ladders, aerial platforms , bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feetMust be able to distinguish colorsThe ability to work one (1) to two (2) shifts of overtime per week, as neededMust be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or related fieldThe ability to interpret and fabricate components based on basic blueprints or specification sheets­­One year of experience with basic troubleshooting pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systemsOne year of experience basic welding/fabricating metal structures/componentsClimb and work from ladders, man lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feetWork in adverse conditions:  wet, hot, dusty, dirty or coldStructural welding certificationPipe welding certification

Educational Background

Requires adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of whole numbers and fractions to perform calculations and conversions to and from metric and English measurement standards.  Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with other employees.  Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs. 

Job Training Skill Development

The Maintenance Manager must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on-the-job experience. 

Decision Making

Must be able to make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs.  The Maintenance Manager should be able to make recommendations to supervision and prioritize necessary repairs.  Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making.  Troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance.

Physical Effort

The Maintenance Manager spends time climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, pulling, stretching, and working in confined spaces and awkward positions, as well as working at heights.  Incumbent handles gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc.  The average weight of objects is 30 pounds.  Incumbent spends 75% of his/her workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing.

Working Conditions

The Maintenance Manager works in all conditions that exist in the plant.  Conditions range from clean shop work exposure to odors, drafts, wet conditions, concrete, grease, dust, and noise.  The work environment consists of smoke and irritating particulate impurities, fumes from machinery, tanks, and large quantities of windblown dust produced as by-product from our processes.  In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10-15 degrees above outdoor temperature), material results in damp, working conditions during cooler months.  These conditions range from severe to mild and can happen daily in any combination.
