Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary

Maintains the maintenance equipment and all related systems. This includes all necessary inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance required for efficient and proper operation. Performs skilled work in all crafts (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting). Works independently with minimal supervision.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:                  

Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors Establishes, maintains, checks, inspects, and follows preventative maintenance programs as directed by the Engineering Management. Installs, maintains, inspects, tests, and repairs systems according to the requirements of the City of White Plains, State of New York, County of Westchester, NYS and County Health Departments, NFPA, The Joint Commission, and all other authorities having jurisdiction. Assist nursing and support staff in the training and operation of proper use of equipment. Maintains knowledge related to the operations of the department. Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within their department and hospital-wide. Demonstrates positive customer service, fosters positive employee relations, is responsible and accountable for the maintenance men Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives and quality improvement. Maintains all records and information pertinent to closing out work assignments. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings. Attends meetings as required. Build and maintains computerized records in various software applications. Assigns work orders and preventive maintenance to mechanics. Updates SDS manuals Works from blueprints, specifications and drawings needed to install and maintain hospital-wide equipment. Repairs patient –related equipment, except what is covered by the Bio-Medical department Adjusts and makes repairs on-site of such items as office equipment, furniture, door closures, etc. Performs wheel and caster work on all rolling stock Maintains inventory on such items as wheelchairs, beds etc. Performs repairs on electrical equipment Installs new equipment Attends meetings as required. Determines materials & obtains proposals needed for specific projects Assists in snow removal as needed. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements                            

Minimum of seven (7) years’ maintenance mechanic experience. High School Graduate or equivalent. Must have a high degree of mechanical expertise Valid, clean driver’s license

Needs little supervision and is a self-starter. Demonstrates ability to establish two-way communication by clearly defining expectations, communicating and utilizing a variety of methods, actively listens to ideas and responds in an appropriate manner.

 

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment                   

Must be physically capable of performing necessary job duties and be able to visually and audibly determine any discrepancies in equipment. Must have physical dexterity, coordination and stamina to perform the inspections, which involves ascend/descend ladders, using and operating the tools and machinery to perform job duties. Must be able to transport heavy objects up to 50 lbs Must be able to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods Must be able to constantly position self in order to perform job duties over an extended of time. Must be able to perform snow/ice removal and work in all outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to perform job duties when exposed to high level of noise. Able to work from sketches and blueprints. Able to respond to written and verbal instructions. Able to concentrate for extended periods of time. Able to work well with department staff and other hospital staff. Able to maintain a calm disposition and work well under stress Able to communicate effectively with all hospital departments and personnel. Have visual perception needed to comprehend color-coded wiring systems. Able to communicate via telephone, fax machine, computer, internet, etc May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
