GAF's Manufacturing facility in Chester is located in an area known not only for its scenic beauty but for its dedication to community. Located between Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC Chester is in a prime location for anyone with any interests varying from hiking, hunting and fishing, to enjoying the cuisine, culture, and activities expected from larger city environments. The Chester Glass Mat facility boasts a highly tenured workforce of just under 100 employees with a safety record of nearly 24 years without a lost-time injury. As our

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Maintenance Mechanic is to evaluate, repair, and replace materials, products, and components for conformance to specifications by performing the duties listed below.

This is a day shift, first shift, 7am - 3:30pm role with overtime/on-call work as needed.

Essential Duties

Read blueprints, manuals and written procedural instructions.

Use hand tools, power tools and shop equipment.

Work on pipe systems which would involve repairing, modifying, and installing systems.

Perform all phases of welding including MIG, TIG and Rod.

Use cutting torch and bronze with a torch.

Perform millwright work such as aligning pump and motor with dial indicator, install sheaves, belts, align equipment. Check for squareness and belt tension.

Install bearings and be able to perform all maintenance work required on bearings.

Maintain plant equipment and mechanical systems in a manner to insure the rated productive capability of the plant.

Know and apply plant safety regulations and practices.

Oversee major rebuilds of mechanical equipment at the direction of the Maintenance supervisor.

Perform preventative maintenance to prevent major production interruption and to ensure the safe operating condition of the plant.

Protect all original plant mechanical drawings and equipment records (vendor info) from loss due to disappearance into personal files or damage due to fire, water, etc.

Perform major repairs using machine skills to construct replacement parts. Requires working knowledge of machine shop tools and procedures.

Assists with maintaining accurate storeroom records & receivables and assist Maintenance Supervisor in developing bill for all major repair/replacement projects.

Assist with training of others to raise the proficiency of the department.

Provide cooperative spirit to contribute continuous improvements to plant Preventative Maintenance Program.

Develop and help maintain predictive systems/technologies, such as vibration monitoring and evolving new systems

Under This Roof, We Require

High School Diploma required

5 years related industrial mechanical maintenance experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

Ability to deal with problems involving a few physical variables in everyday situations
