The Regional Maintenance Engineer (Mechanical Bias) is responsible for the maintenance and reliability of mechanical systems and equipment across Stericycle’s regional facilities. Working under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the role ensures the effective delivery of Stericycle’s total preventative maintenance strategy. This includes planned and reactive maintenance, upgrades, and the continuous improvement of plant reliability. The role is integral to minimizing downtime and supporting safe and efficient plant operations across the Stericycle network.
Key activities include:
• Conducting fault diagnosis, repairs, and maintenance of all mechanical systems and components.
• Supporting planned plant outages and upgrades.
• Maintaining records of maintenance activities via the Maintenance Management System.
• Ensuring compliance with UK health and safety regulations and company standards.
• Collaborating with operations and engineering teams to enhance plant performance.
• Perform fault finding, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical systems, including pumps, valves, gearboxes, conveyors, and boilers.
• Maintain hydraulic systems, including ram cylinders, seals, pipework, valves, filters, fluids, and pumps.
• Maintain compressed air systems, including compressors, pipework, seals, valves, and divertors.
• Conduct fabrication, repair, drilling, bolting, and welding on structural metalwork. Use power tools such as drills, saws, and grinders.
• Maintain water systems, including both low and high-pressure pipework, hot and cold water systems, spray lances, and solenoids.
• Perform maintenance of boiler systems, including high-pressure vessels, heat exchangers, economizers, and steam systems.
Planned and Reactive Maintenance
• Execute planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules to minimize equipment downtime.
• Respond rapidly to equipment breakdowns, diagnosing faults and restoring systems to operational functionality.
• Actively identify opportunities to improve maintenance schedules and reduce unplanned downtime.
Contractor and Project Management
• Oversee contractors performing maintenance or project work, ensuring compliance with Stericycle standards and safety regulations.
• Issue permits to work and conduct risk assessments for contractor-led activities.
• Support plant improvement projects, including the installation, commissioning, and upgrade of mechanical equipment.
Technical Support and Documentation
• Assist operational teams with technical expertise to resolve complex mechanical issues.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of maintenance activities, fault reports, and asset history
• Monitor spare parts inventory and advise on stock requirements to support maintenance schedules.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
• Adhere to Stericycle’s health and safety policies, ensuring all tasks are conducted in line with UK legislation and company standards.
• Safely isolate mechanical equipment to enable maintenance activities, ensuring zero harm to personnel.
• Conduct and document risk assessments, implementing control measures to minimize risks during maintenance activities.
Out of Hours Support
• Be available to provide emergency support outside of normal working hours when required.
Essential Qualifications
• Time-served apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.
• Relevant engineering qualification, such as NVQ Level 3, ONC, or HNC in Mechanical Engineering.
• Recognized industry training in hydraulics, pneumatics, and steam systems (e.g., BOAS).
• Proven experience in mechanical maintenance within heavy process industries (e.g., power generation, manufacturing, or similar).
• Welding certifications (e.g., TWI Coded Welding or equivalent).
Desirable Qualifications
• Evidence of maintaining high-risk pressure vessels in compliance with insurance standards.
• Experience with air pollution control devices such as baghouses, evaporative coolers, or dosing systems.
• Familiarity with incineration or other waste treatment methods, including knowledge of relevant legislation.
Experience Requirements
• Minimum of 2 years of post-apprenticeship experience in mechanical maintenance, including fault finding, repairs, and system upgrades.
• Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental compliance in industrial settings.
• Experience managing contractors and supervising maintenance projects.
