You will oversee all island maintenance including routine and emergency activities.  Responsible for the safety and operability of all island facilities and systems including fresh water, septic, heating, cooking, and electrical systems.  Assist with the guest service and supply management.  Assist manager with safety systems and safety training on the island.

$21.75 per hour

What will you do in this job?

This is a remote, boat-in position located in Kenai Fjords National Park. Due to this, all positions at KFWL require assisting in other departments.

 

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities):

Provide excellent customer service to guests and other team membersMake sound judgments and anticipate issues and opportunitiesHandle comments, complaints, and concerns with a high level of efficiency and in the best interest of the guestWork closely with all other departments to ensure overall guest satisfactionEnsure that guests’ special needs are metGreet arriving/departing guests in a professional and pleasant mannerBe knowledgeable of daily functions or activities occurring at the Lodge and in area to answer guests’ questionsCoordinate with the Maintenance Manager, the Port Mechanic, and the Land Facilities Maintenance Technician regarding the maintenance of island facilitiesWhile on the island be prepared to assist with employee and guest maintenance requests 24 hours a dayOperate, maintain, and troubleshoot fresh water system including the provision of samples and sampling data for analysis by the Alaska DECOperate, maintain, and troubleshoot propane systems. Conduct daily checks to assure adequate supply and safe operation of all propane applicationsMaintain and troubleshoot septic systems. Assist with periodic tests and examinations by Alaska DEC personnelTroubleshoot and repair plumbing, heating, and cooking systems including propane hot water heaters, propane stoves, wood stoves, and restroom plumbingOperate, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical system including the generator(s), charging system, inverters, and wiringAssist with guest care. Specific tasks include movement of guest luggage between dock and cabins, daily stocking and chopping of wood supplies, trash pick-up, day lodge and wilderness lodge supply deliveryAssist the Maintenance Manager with supply management, specifically wood, propane, repair supplies, and safety suppliesPrimarily responsible for the safety and incident management programs on the island. This specifically includes coordination and execution of frequent training, equipment maintenance, and regular testing, hazard recognition and mitigation, and coordination with operations staff regarding safety issuesArrive to work on time, ready to work, dressed in clean uniform, with a neat and clean appearanceAssist with the start-up and shut-down of facility in coordination with KFT, the Maintenance Manager, and General ManagerParticipate in emergency response activities including firefighting, emergency medical activities (within an employee’s training limitations), and other incidentsOther duties as assigned What skills and experience do you need for this job?

Required Qualifications

Current CPR and First Aid CertificationPrevious experience/ training in the maintenance fieldBasic understanding of food service practices and standards

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of water systems, septic systems, propane fired appliances, plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentryKnowledge of proper food handling and preparation standards as prescribed by Alaska’s DECAble to live in close quarters with others in a remote wilderness settingAble to pass pre-employment and random NIDA drug screening testsAble to communicate and work with other employees and assist the guests to the islandAbility to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as a team member, while maintaining prioritiesAbility to regularly use mobility to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouchAbility to lift and/or move up to 50 poundsAbility to work in harsh weather conditions for extended periods of time on a varied schedule

Physical Abilities:

Must be at least 21 years of age.Must be able to see, hear, and verbally communicate with regular frequencyMust be able to maintain balance on uneven surfaces, and ladders, and to negotiate stairs with regular frequencyMust be able to walk, sit, and stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of timeMust be able to kneel, crawl, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basisMust be able to reach at, above and below shoulder height with regular frequencyMust be able to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basisMust possess sufficient fine and gross motor skills to operate computers and other equipment as required What will your work environment be like?
