A Brief Summary of This Position

This is an individual contributor position responsible for assisting with all functions of the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Coatings Division to achieve personal and professional growth. 

Essential Functions:

Testing, inspecting, repairing and re-assembling basic plant equipment, components, and systems including but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, hoists, gear boxes, forklifts, straddle trucks, shag trucks, company vehicles, pneumatic and mechanical systems, power transmission components, combustion engines, boiler systems, and electrical and hydraulic systemsUnderstand basic metal fabrication (welding, cutting and brazing)Possess basic blueprint readingCommunicate with other maintenance and production team members via e-mail, phone, and face-to-faceOperate gauging equipment including tape measures, micrometers, and dial calipersResponsible for utilizing and maintaining all site tools and equipmentUnderstand Lock-Out/Tag-Out proceduresClimb and work from ladders, aerial platforms, bridge cranes, and roofs more than 36 feetPossess basic testing and troubleshooting skillsComplete record logs including labor, repairs made, equipment, and use of materials on the computer

Important Details about the Role

Job Training Skill Development

Maintenance Technician must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on the job experience. 

Decision Making

The Maintenance Technician assists with troubleshooting plant equipment and facilities that require considerable independent judgment.  Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making.  Independent judgment is required when the task at hand becomes too involved.  Seeks direction from more qualified technician or Supervisor. 

EFFORT

Physical Effort

The Maintenance Technician spends time climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, pulling, stretching, and working in confined spaces and awkward positions, as well as working at heights.  Incumbent handles gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc.  The average weight of objects is 30 pounds.  Incumbent spends 75% of his / her workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing.

Mental and Visual Effort

Must be able to work in high stress situations under adverse conditions for long period of time using intense mental and visual concentration.  Good hand to eye coordination with a good sense of depth perception at all times.  Must be able to distinguish colors.  Requires methodical and analytical thought processes to follow complicated diagrams.

Responsibility for Equipment and Process

Responsible for the preventive maintenance and care for hand tools, electrical tools, AC/DC welders, and a computerized maintenance database.  Must exhibit considerable care and attention towards equipment and parts.  Must follow proper maintenance procedures in order to prevent improper installation of parts.  Typical average cost per incident is minor under $1,500.

Must use considerable care and attention to equipment and parts are not lost.  Typical average cost per incident is minor under $1,500.  This cost could be escalated by improper installation of repair.  The likelihood of damage is possible but can be prevented with considerable care and attention. 

Responsibility for Safety of Others

Typical injury to others could consist of electrical shock, cuts, bruises, burns, etc.  Physical injuries could result from poor installations and repairs of machinery or improper use in handling or lifting equipment.  Alert workmanship and caution can prevent injuries, such as broken fingers, arms, legs and / or crushed limbs.  Responsible for other personnel assisting on the job.

Each employee is responsible for learning and applying all provided safety training as outlined by the company and department safety representative and / or supervisor.  Keeping safety in the forefront in the daily performance of job duties includes personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources.  As a Maintenance Technician, the incumbent must complete all required safety training.

Actively participates in department safety; demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors and conforms to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.

JOB CONDITIONS

Working Conditions

The Maintenance Technician 1 works in all conditions that exist in the plant.  Conditions range from clean shop work exposure to odors, drafts, wet conditions, dirt, grease, dust, and noise.  The work environment consists of smoke and irritating particulate impurities, acid fumes from pickling tanks, and large quantities of windblown dust and ash produced as by-product to the galvanizing process.  In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10-15 degrees above outdoor temperature), and melting snow off of incoming material results in damp, cold working conditions in the winter.  These conditions range from severe to mild and can happen daily in any combination. 

Hazards

Potential hazards include falls to the ground due to working at heights or slick working conditions and heat exhaustion or aggravations created by blowing dust and ash.  In addition, there are pinch point, struck by, confined space and extreme cold/heat conditions that the incumbent is exposed to.  There is also constant exposure to such hazards as burns, cuts, contusions of various degrees and eye injuries make the possibility for incidents high even under the best conditions.
