Operates and maintains steam plant equipment, performs preventative and emergency maintenance on steam plant equipment. Responsibilities Performs preventative and demand maintenance and repairs on autoclaves, washers, sterilizers, dryers, steam kettles, ovens and other related equipment by replacing and/or repairing items such as driver units, electric motors and control valves, changing seals, gaskets and bearings and installing water lines and drains. Maintains, repairs, replaces and extends steam piping systems including components of the physical plant such as expansion joints, valves, steam traps, strainers, heat exchangers, gauges and insulation. Operates steam and heating boiler/air conditioning systems by starting up and shutting down boilers and related pumps, fans, air compressors, steam expansion joints; monitors and adjusts temperature control system, pressure and feed water levels. Records meter and gauge readings to ensure distribution of steam/air heating to designated areas. Monitors and adjusts chemical treatment systems and analyzes chemical formulas. Monitors adherence to the Preventative Maintenance Program by ensuring staff carry out preventative maintenance on equipment and fixtures such as pumps, fans, air compressors, steam expansion joints by oiling and greasing equipment and repairing or replacing items such as valves, bearings, seals, fans and pumps. Tests and maintains auxiliary power generators and repairs/adjusts as required. Monitors and adjusts physical plant and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems by operating a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and/or electronic control systems and performing such tasks as altering systems operating parameters and schedules; repairs and calibrates various instrumentation components of the steam and HVAC systems; maintains appropriate activity logs. Performs analysis on boiler systems such as combustion analysis, water treatment analysis and steam efficiency analysis. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Certificate of competency as a 4th class Power Engineer recognized by the Province of B.C. Two years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experiences. Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment.
