Position Summary:

Works independently to perform digital and 3D screening and diagnostic mammography and may also include wire and wire-free localizations, stereotactic breast biopsies, and DEXA imaging based on hospital policies and/or practice standards, under the supervision of the interpreting physician. Must demonstrate an understanding of breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Must maintain accuracy in breast positioning, exposure techniques, and image evaluation while adhering to radiation protection and safety standards. Must understand the federal regulations governing mammography practice to meet the standards for the performance of breast imaging. Must have knowledge of the quality assurance policies and quality control testing for mammography within federal regulation guidelines. 

Duties:

Review orders prior to day of procedure to ensure accuracy and to avoid delay in patient care.Provide excellent patient care by educating and preparing patients for their procedure while utilizing effective communication.Obtain and document accurate patient medical history to assist radiologist’s interpretation.Ensure patient comfort and safety for the duration of their procedure.Perform procedures as required by physician’s order.Perform screening and diagnostic mammograms and may also perform wire and wire-free localizations, stereotactic breast biopsies, and Dexa imaging at applicable locations.Select proper exposure factors of radiographic equipment for each examination.Position and instruct patient while utilizing protective shielding, immobilization, and supportive devices as required.Demonstrate an understanding of ALARA guidelines by strictly adhering to the Imaging Department’s Radiation Safety policies and procedures.Completion of exam in hospital information system.Cleaning and maintaining all imaging equipment.Perform daily and weekly Quality Control tests on radiologist’s workstation, mammography machine, and Stereotactic equipment.Maintain, generate, and keep organized documentation for all upcoming biopsies and localizations.Request, upload, and prepare patients outside mammograms when necessary for comparison of the Radiologist’s dictation.Imaging technologists are required to cover all outpatient and hospital locations as necessary and appropriate.May also assist with mentoring and/or training students, new hires.

Education:

Completion of a Radiologic Technology Associate degree program. 

Experience: 

Minimum one (1) year Mammography experience preferred.

License/Certification:

ARRT(M) certified or registry eligible (If eligible, must become ARRT(M) certified within 24 months of hire or transfer date)South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association certified required.American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to be initially completed with the TH Organizational Development Office within 30 calendar days of hire date (exceptions to obtain certification from a provider other than the TH Organizational Development Office are approved by TH Organizational development on a case-by-case basis). 

Knowledge/Skills:

Understand and utilize ALARA concepts and critical thinking, positioning, time management and effective communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
