BASIC FUNCTION:

The Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager is responsible for the safe, orderly operation and maintenance of the department’s shared research and teaching instrumentation. The position also plays a key support role in the large chemical and laboratory equipment stockroom, which services both the Chemistry Department and other University units.

Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In the Area of Instrumentation Management:
Maintain and perform routine diagnostic troubleshooting on research and instructional instrumentation in chemistry laboratories.

Oversee and maintain core departmental instrumentation, including systems in the Teknor-Apex Instrumentation Laboratory and teaching laboratories.

Train new users on safe and effective operation of instrumentation; implement access protocols and maintain user records.

Conduct preventative maintenance and maintain associated logs and documentation.

Perform minor equipment repairs independently.

Collaborate with novice and experienced users to develop or refine analytical protocols and procedures.

Transport consumables—including bottled gases and cryogens—from receiving areas for instrumentation use.

In the Area of Stockroom and Laboratory Support:
Establish and maintain a computerized chemical inventory system in compliance with current OSHA requirements.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) records.

Coordinate chemical waste disposal in collaboration with departmental and University Safety Office personnel.

Procure chemicals, gases, laboratory supplies, and equipment; maintain inventory and purchasing records.

Receive, inspect, store, and safeguard incoming shipments of materials and equipment.

Package and ship materials as needed.

Distribute chemicals and equipment to research and teaching laboratories.

Monitor chemical usage and ensure sufficient inventory of consumables, spare parts, and equipment for teaching operations.

Label chemicals according to University standards and ensure appropriate documentation is available.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise graduate and undergraduate assistants working in the stockroom or assisting with equipment maintenance.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:

Scientific instrumentation typical of research and instructional chemistry laboratories (e.g., NMR, UV-Vis, GC, HPLC, FTIR). Computers and peripheral equipment; software including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and inventory systems.

Required Qualifications REQUIRED:

1. Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field OR, Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of two years of experience with laboratory instrumentation.

2. Demonstrated research-level proficiency with chemical instrumentation (including data interpretation and analysis).

3. Demonstrated experience maintaining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers.

4. Demonstrated proficiency with common computer applications (including spreadsheets, word processing, and database management systems).

5. Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED:

1. Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field.

2. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining Shimadzu instrumentation.

3. Demonstrated experience with chemical procurement and laboratory inventory systems.

4. Demonstrated knowledge of chemical safety standards and regulatory compliance.
