The opportunity:
Reporting to the Head of Data, this role is responsible for advancing the maturity and modernisation of our data and analytics capabilities. You will oversee the delivery, operation, and management of critical data infrastructure, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of the business.
In this role, you will help shape the strategic direction of our data platforms, ensuring their long-term sustainability. Collaborating closely with the Head of Data and key stakeholders across AIA NZ and the wider Group, you will optimise data-driven value and enhance operational efficiency.
Additionally, you will build and lead a high-performing Data Engineering team, managing multiple partner support arrangements and providing guidance to a diverse cross-functional user base. Across the broader Data team, you will help uplift ways-of-working, focusing on standards and practices for collaborative development.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading and managing a team of Data Engineers, including permanent and contingent staff, with a strong focus on delivering business value through modern engineering practices.
Overseeing the end-to-end change delivery, operation, and lifecycle development of data and analytics platforms and data products.
Ensuring effective management of operational support obligations, including risk and incident management.
Managing vendor relationships and services across the data platform suite, including support arrangements, project resourcing, and architectural guidance.
Providing leadership in data strategy, design, delivery, and operations, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
Defining and implementing processes and strategies for data engineering, supporting the design and execution of data analytics delivery models.
Fostering a culture of continuous improvement, driving efficiency and innovation within the data engineering function.
Developing and maintaining strong relationships across the business to ensure alignment and collaboration on data initiatives.
Serving as the enterprise leader in data engineering, in collaboration with the Tech Lead - Data, setting strategic direction, mentoring team members, and enhancing organisational capabilities.
Staying at the forefront of emerging data analytics technologies and methodologies, ensuring best-in-class services and coaching stakeholders on industry trends.
Contributing to the strategic evolution of AIA’s data delivery practice.
Leading and promoting automated compliance within data engineering, ensuring adherence to regulatory and internal standards.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
Strong stakeholder management and engagement capabilities.
Proven experience leading development teams and managing projects within cross-functional or matrix environments.
Demonstrated ability to manage and optimise vendor relationships, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality outcomes.
Strong commercial acumen with a deep understanding of business processes, particularly within financial services.
At least 7 years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, and data warehousing.
Strong Jira and Confluence skills.
Relevant certifications such as CBIP, CDMP, Kimball, or Wherescape are advantageous.
Architecture or solution certifications from public cloud providers (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) are a plus.
