Compensation

Compensation includes a base salary of $87,200.00 - $130,800.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Job Description

Are you a skilled editor and leader with a passion for clarity and accuracy and a love of news? Join our team at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a manager for our Quality Control Team, which serves as the final line of quality control for the incredible work of the largest local news organization in Georgia.  The team combines the strengths of a traditional newspaper copy desk with modern digital sensibilities and skills.

We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented manager to help lead our Quality Control (QC) team in ensuring accurate, engaging, and optimized content. This role requires a leader with strong editorial and organizational skills who can manage multiple priorities while collaborating effectively with content teams. You will lead a team that provides the final edit, review and polish of content from all areas of the newsroom, ensuring the highest standards of clarity, accuracy and audience appeal for our readers. 

The Quality Control team operates 365 days a year and managers may be required to work weekend or non-typical shifts to meet the deadline newsroom needs of a digital operation.    

 

Responsibilities: 

- Supervise the end-to-end quality control process, including copy editing, headline optimization, linking, SEO checks and content publishing. 

- Serve as the primary point of contact between the Quality Control desk and various content teams to ensure seamless communication and workflow. 

- Efficiently prioritize content reviews based on deadlines, story significance and audience needs. 

- Coordinate timing of reviews to ensure prompt publication while maintaining quality and accuracy. 

- Apply subject matter expertise to handle content on sensitive topics and flag such material for additional review with Standards and Practices if needed. 

- Identify stories needing additional optimization and work with teams to enhance visibility and engagement. Engage with real-time audience analytics  tools to determine when a story might be underperforming.  

- Track and manage corrections across all products to maintain transparency and uphold content accuracy. 

- Lead training sessions on tools such as Tansa and Arc, promoting best practices for content editing, consistency and workflow efficiency. 
 
- Coach team members to recognize areas of improvement in copy and to work collaboratively with writers to solve content concerns in a way that best serves readers. 
 
- Advocate for quality editing across the newsroom, suggesting workflow and training  tactics (or changes) that will improve both our content and our journalists. 

- Identify to senior desk leader and content team leaders patterns and trends in content that could be addressed effectively by stylebook updates, guidance to writers and other tools. 

  

Qualifications: 

- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 6 years’ experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 4 years’ experience; a Ph.D. and 1 year experience in a related field; or without a degree 10 years’ experience in a related field  

- At least 1 year of experience in leading teams or management position  

- Extensive experience in copy editing, editorial quality control or digital content management. 

- Strong editorial judgment and understanding of sensitive content review. 

- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and manage workflows in a fast-paced newsroom environment. 

- Expertise in SEO best practices, content optimization and digital publishing tools. 

- Familiarity with correction tracking and editorial standards. 

- Leadership skills and experience in training staff on editorial tools and standards.
