Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology has an exciting opportunity for a full time Manager, Research Laboratory position. The incumbent oversees the day-to-day operations of the research laboratory, including maintenance and upkeep and ensuring an efficient and effective laboratory working environment.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

Formulates and implements short- and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories.

Implements laboratory policies and procedures and coordinates with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services.

Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.

Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintains conformance with specific operational standards.

Maintains quality checks on the safety of laboratories and insures maintenance of the facilities according to good laboratory practices.

Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.

Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.

Assists in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations.

Compiles and prepares reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions.

Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.

Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required

Department Specific Functions

Help the PI to run the laboratory to facilitate scientific discoveries, publication, funding and developing intellectual property. Performing bench research (experiments) using the broad arsenal of special laboratory skills described below. Maintaining the lab equipment, sourcing necessary supplies and services; compliance. Interact with researchers and managers of other laboratories, to facilitate sharing equipment, technologies and otherwise facilitating the interaction between the labs in the department.

Department Specific Qualifications                                                                 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field Master of Science preferred.

Experience:

10 or more years of experience in competitive research environment.  Broad experience in a variety of experimental techniques and approaches at the molecular, cell and whole animal level, as supported by a track record of scientific publications.  Understanding of the system of extramural grant funding, publication in quality journals and general vision of what is required for running a successful research laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Knowledge: broad understanding of biomedical science: cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, animal physiology.  This knowledge must be evidenced by prior publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Knowledge: ability to discuss science questions, formulate and clearly explain ideas, prepare data for presentation and publication.

Special skills in cell biology experiments: in vitro culture of cell lines and primary cells, optimizing growth, sourcing of the required media, disposables and equipment.

Command of a broad arsenal of research techniques: protein, mRNA isolation, electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoblot, PCR, in situ immunoistaing, microscopy, etc., and ability to quickly learn new methods.

Ability to not only reproduce, but to improve and design experimental protocols.

Motivation and proven ability to work independently, with minor consultation with the PI and initiative to solve technical and logistical problems. 

Critical thinking: analyze scientific literature, ideas suggested by other researchers, chose the potentially most successful approaches.  

Communication Skills: ability to work with other researchers sharing tasks within the lab, in the university and collaborators in other institutions.  Ability to solicit ideas and technical solutions from other members of the team, including the PI.

Communication: ability and willingness to train junior personnel, such as graduate students, in various techniques and help them and other researchers troubleshoot technical and/or result interpretation problems. 

Management: keeping laboratory records, finding necessary resources (reagents, equipment, services) ordering reagents, purchasing and keeping records.  Delegating some such tasks if necessary and following through.

Designing and following schedules on equipment maintenance, animal and safety protocols.

Good verbal and writing communication skills. Confidence to express and argue a point of view that is beneficial to the team, both in science and management aspects of the role.

Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments, both with respect to the research project(s) and lab management.
