About Boddington and Tanami

 

Newmont’s Boddington mine is a large gold and copper mine located within the South West of  Western Australia, close to the rural farming town of Boddington and about 100km southeast of Perth. One of the largest gold producers in the world, you will join a diverse team that is at the forefront of mining

Newmont’s Tanami mine is a fly in, fly out operation located in the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory, about 270 km from the remote aboriginal community of Yuendumu and 540 km from Alice Springs.  The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust.

Who we are looking for

Reporting to the Head, Social Performance, APAC, the Director, Social Performance is a newly created operational leadership role that will support Newmont’s tier-one mine sites at both Boddington, Western Australia and Tanami, Northern Territory.

You will be an active member of site leadership teams and lead the Social Performance teams to develop and implement strategies that strengthen community relationships and create a lasting positive impact.

 

You will implement site social performance strategies to maintain social acceptance and achieve Newmont’s Environmental Social and Governance goals through effective social and human rights impact assessments, management of associated risks and opportunities (including those involving business partners) and acting as the subject matter expert on mine site social risks.

 

You will be dedicated to strengthening community relationships, building robust feedback mechanisms and implementing programs that respond to community needs. Additionally, you will engage with local regulators, communities and partners to address commitments, complaints, grievances and regulatory requirements, and play a pivotal role in achieving our purpose of delivering value through sustainable and responsible mining.

Other responsibilities will be to: Provide leadership of the Social Performance team to develop, implement and manage systematic social performance and community relations programs at the Boddington and Tanami mine sites.Implement the Enterprise Social Performance Standards including, but not limited to, stakeholder relationship management, community development, human rights, Indigenous Peoples, and social aspects related to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).Ensure cross-functional implementation of social performance-related programs and risk controls including local employment, local procurement, human rights, cultural heritage, participatory monitoring and stakeholder engagement.Develop and oversee implementation and monitoring of comprehensive community engagement plans and programs to optimize stakeholder collaboration, to mitigate risk and to deliver Newmont objectives.Ensure support of, participation in and reporting on compliance, assurance and governance activities associated with social performance.Implement social and human rights impact assessments, manage related risks and opportunities (including with business partners) and serve as the social risk subject matter expert for site.Develop and implement site community investment and development programs aligned with Enterprise frameworks and local community needs and priorities. Ensure effective implementation and management of operational grievance mechanisms to address local stakeholder complaints and grievances, including Indigenous and human rights due diligence.Monitor external social performance events, trends, risks and performance to identify gaps and develop action plans that improve performance . Engage with local regulators, communities and partners regarding commitments, complaints/grievances and requirements.Support lessons learned from events and, implement and track developed actions.Ensure requirements are met for sustainability reporting, e.g., Annual Sustainability Report and Climate Report.

 

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, demonstrate a confident interpersonal ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, paired with a deep understanding of best practices in  social performance.

You will also possess the following Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Social Performance, Community Relations or relevant discipline.Demonstrated leadership experience within the mining industry and building teamsExperience managing building positive relationships and managing multi-stakeholder projects.Experience in stakeholder engagement, community relations or community development in a similar roleUnderstanding of consultation processes to support permitting and approvals in an Australian mining context.High level understanding and experience of environmental, social and governance-based reporting and requirements.

 

This will be a permanent, full-time position based out of the Newmont Perth (other Newmont Australian hub locations may be considered).  Regular travel to our Boddington, WA and Tanami, NT mine sites will be required, as will ad-hoc national/international travel.
