In Workday’s Core Software Platform Engineering team, we're dedicated to empowering workmate productivity through our innovative platforms, tools, and services. About the Role

This role will support one or more direct or indirect contracts with the U.S. Federal Government which, due to federal government security requirements, mandates that all Workday personnel working on the contracts be United States citizens (naturalized or native).

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Engineering Manager to lead our high-performing Platform Engineering team. You will be responsible for empowering our engineering organization to build and ship products quickly and reliably by providing a robust and scalable Kubernetes-based platform. You will lead a team of dedicated engineers focused on building, scaling, and maintaining our infrastructure and internal tooling. This role requires a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

This role involves collaborating with teams across multiple locations and time zones. You will need to be adept at communicating effectively and building strong relationships with colleagues in diverse locations.

Operations:

Lead the development, maintenance, and evolution of our Kubernetes-based platform, ensuring its scalability, reliability, and security.

Drive the adoption of best practices for infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and automation.

Work closely with development and product teams to understand their requirements.

Champion a culture of observability and monitoring to ensure platform health and performance

Team leadership and development:

Lead, mentor, and coach a team of platform engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, professional development, and high performance.

Drive technical decision-making and architectural discussions within the team.

Meet performance metrics, goals, and schedules for the Platform Engineering team, ensuring alignment to service level agreements (SLAs).

Foster a collaborative and data-informed team, promoting continuous improvement and knowledge sharing between the broader Core Software application and software teams.


Incident and problem management:

Lead the team in responding to, triaging, and resolving platform incidents, minimizing downtime and impact on users.

Assist in conducting post-mortems to identify root causes and implement preventative measures.

Proactively identify and address potential problems before they impact the platform.

Establish and run an effective escalation process for incidents and ensure timely resolution of high-priority issues and ensure proper handoff between global operations leadership and engineers.

Security & compliance:

Ensure the platform adheres to security best practices and industry standards.

Implement and maintain security policies and procedures to protect sensitive data and systems.

Stay abreast of security threats and vulnerabilities, proactively addressing potential risks.


Reporting and documentation:

Provide regular updates to collaborators on platform performance, incidents, and projects.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and operational procedures.

Track and report on key platform metrics to identify areas for improvement.

About You

Basic Qualifications

3+ years in a similar role, managing global teams in a delivery-focused environment.

5+ years of hands-on experience working with infrastructure, either on-premise or cloud-based, with a deep understanding of systems architecture, networking, and security.

Bachelor's degree in a computer related field or equivalent work experience

Other Qualifications

Leadership Experience: Proven track record of successfully leading and managing engineering teams, with a focus on fostering a positive and productive work environment.

Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.  

Team Building and Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams, mentor engineers, and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Technical Proficiency: Solid understanding of Kubernetes and containerization technologies (Docker, etc.), infrastructure as code tools (Terraform), and CI/CD pipelines. Experience with AWS and Go is a plus.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound technical decisions and drive consensus within the team.

Passion for Platform Engineering: A genuine interest in building and maintaining scalable and reilable infrastructure platforms.

Workday Pay Transparency Statement

The annualized base salary ranges for the primary location and any additional locations are listed below.  Workday pay ranges vary based on work location. As a part of the total compensation package, this role may be eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual refresh stock grants. Each candidate’s compensation offer will be based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, geography, experience, skills, job duties, and business need, among other things.
