The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to promote and protect the American Express brand through public relations; corporate sustainability (CS); communications and colleague engagement efforts.
The Manager of Corporate Sustainability, based in Europe, will support American Express’ global strategic framework for sustainability reporting and the implementation of corporate sustainability and non-financial reporting priorities, with a focus on reporting requirements and efforts in Europe.
The Manager of Corporate Sustainability will report to the Director of Corporate Sustainability in New York and sit on the enterprise Corporate Sustainability team. They will support European sustainability reporting requirements, including data collection, data quality assessments, reporting, and other related activities. This will require collaboration with business units across American Express, including Controllership and Finance, Risk, the General Counsel’s Organization, and market-based teams to drive decision making and alignment. The role will also be responsible for overseeing the programmatic planning for colleague engagement regarding nonprofit volunteering efforts across the EMEA countries outside of the UK.

How will you make an impact in this role?
Support implementation of American Express’ global corporate sustainability reporting framework with a specific focus in Europe to ensure compliance with applicable sustainability regulations and standards including the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting and Due Diligence Directives (CSRD, CSDDD etc.), EU Taxonomy, UK TCFD, ISSB, IFRS, etc. Engage with relevant enterprise and local teams across the business to meet external reporting deadlines and provide advisory and subject matter expertise to ensure alignment with the enterprise sustainability reporting framework. Help develop processes to track, monitor, and report key environmental, social, and governance metrics across Amex’s European operations Support annual Double Materiality Assessment updates In partnership with ESG Controllership, coordinate with internal and external auditors as it relates to limited and reasonable assurance over ESG reporting, where required Support Europe-specific corporate sustainability governance and working groups to meet local regulatory requirements, including in American Express’ markets in Spain, the UK, Germany, France, and others. Work with third-party consultants as applicable to ensure timely and quality reporting and approvals as applicable. Stay updated on evolving global ESG reporting regulations, trends, and best practices. Serve as the colleague engagement champion for EMEA, supporting local teams to coordinate European volunteering and donation efforts, inclusive of the annual colleague giving campaign Provide support on other corporate sustainability and community impact initiatives as appropriate, across Europe.Minimum Qualifications
Significant amount of experience in a corporate sustainability role with experience in ESG reporting and project management Bachelors’ degree (required) and Masters’ degree (preferred) in relevant field including Sustainability Management, Sustainable Finance, Business Administration, Environmental Studies, etc. Strong understanding of European sustainability reporting regulations (CSRD, EU Taxonomy, UK TCFD, CSDDD, etc.) Fluency in one or more European languages (plus English) is a plus. Outstanding project management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities and ability to work in fast-paced and dynamic environment Proven experience and subject matter expertise in sustainability and climate frameworks, and reporting programs (CDP, TCFD, GRI, SASB, GHG Protocol, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), etc.) Experience with ESG software including Workiva and Watershed preferred. Ability to work cross-functionally and globally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Outstanding interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills Operate well under pressure with a high degree of composure and professionalism.
