At Paylocity, Software Engineering Managers are technology focused leaders that act as the bridge between an engineering team’s outcomes and the business strategies driving those outcomes.  It is a critical role in our Product and Technology organization. This key role serves as manager of a team of roughly 10 engineers and is responsible for driving workstream focused outcomes in our employee platforms domain, while working to achieve a high level of performance and efficiency.  This position requires commitment to exceptional results, a strong desire for continuous improvement and the ability to build a collaborative culture within the team.

What will you do:

Manage one of the teams focused on delivering customer facing value within our Employee Platforms domain.Work with your team and leaders to develop good engineering practices, creating a culture of engineering excellenceThrive in an agile environment with 2 week sprint cycles, be an agile coach and continuously managing your teams’ backlogOwn the overall health and engineering quality of your product and demonstrate your ability to help scale and improve upon these systemsBreak down the complexity of projects, services, and processes while communicating with other engineering teams and non-technical stakeholdersSpeak confidently about project timelines, system architectures, engineering practices, quality and moreRaise risks immediately while proposing potential directional solutions to mitigateHelp guide your team in the creation of properly leveled estimates in order to set realistic delivery expectations with stakeholders and leadershipImplement routines and frameworks for efficient communication and decision makingKeep your team informed of broader initiatives throughout the organization and help them integrate when neededNegotiate delivery tradeoffs with your Product partner to ensure tech debt and maintenance work is managed appropriatelyHelp mentor and grow each one of your engineers to help them achieve the next level of their careersWork with Talent Acquisition partners in the hiring process to build a high functioning teamConduct interviews for candidates, and develop interview loops appropriate for the level of role being hiredContribute to the sense of psychological safety on your teamHold regular 1:1s with your direct reports to ensure the overall health of your organization is understoodGive regular and clear feedback around individual's performanceFoster technical decision making on the team, and make final decisions when necessaryLead the team during operational major incidents Perform root cause analysis Identify improvement areas to avoid repeat incidents Creating and delivering incident post-mortems where applicable Create opportunities for individuals for growth, recognize team members publicly for achievements, and reward team members appropriately for high performanceHold yourself and your team accountable for delivering high quality, secure, reusable, and scalable softwareBuild and maintain a healthy relationship with product counterparts in the domain

What you bring:

Bachelor's degree in engineering or similar with 5+ years of managerial experienceA demonstrable level of successful strategy implementation along with proven outcomesCollaborative project planning capabilities that factor in risk/reward tradeoffs, assumptions and confidence levelsAn exceptional ability to communicate with a collaborative demeanorA history of both direct and indirect influence using a data-driven approachHands-on experience working in cloud technologies (preferably AWS)Working understanding of various architectural patterns like API First, SOA and Microservices and the related advantages and trade-offsExperience leveraging observability and monitoring tools such as DataDogExposure to work management tools such as Atlassian’s JiraVersed in the design and development of highly scalable modern API based platformsMust show passion for the role and take responsibility for the team’s deliverablesAble to work effectively in a team environment in an agile fashionPractical and creative in problem-solving

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $129,400 - $184,800 /yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
