GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Administers and coordinates the technical activities of a scientific or research group in relation to the operation of specialized laboratories. Acts as an advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements. Interacts with other labs and coordinates the program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees. Serves as an advisor to faculty and other research staff to meet schedules and or resolve technical problems. Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and applied.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops and implements laboratory policies and procedures. Manages and coordinates operational policies and procedures; coordinates with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services. Assists in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories; sets priorities, assigns responsibilities, and establishes timetables. Projects future needs and formulates strategies consistent with projections. Coordinates activities of university science laboratory to assist faculty in teaching and research programs: Consults with faculty laboratory coordinator to determine equipment purchase priorities based on budget allowances, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities. Organizes and maintains structure of lab and implements new technologies as needed. (35%)Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and equipment specific requirements. Provides a high level of lab support to the Investigator and research staff. (20%)Performs procedures in the lab according to faculty and supervisor. Plans and conducts meetings with subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards. Develops methods of laboratory experimentation, applying knowledge of scientific theory and computer capability. (10%)Acts as a liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintains conformance with specific operational standards. Maintains quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and insure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices. (15%)Directs staff in the development and preparation of daily activities, evaluates, develops, and implements procedures to improve the operating qualities and efficiency. Manages the day-to-day activities within the lab, including ensuring operation of essential equipment, ordering and making sure adequate supplies are available for routine experimental procedures, reviewing budgets, etc. (20%)Performs other duties as assigned or required.QUALIFICATIONS:
