As a*Manager Tax*you will manage a team of professionals that prepare and file various indirect tax returns. This role involves interpreting federal, state, and local tax laws related to fuels. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently. This role works closely with upper management to ensure that the company stays compliant in all jurisdictions. You can help achieve this goal if you can: * Manage federal and motor fuel tax return compliance, tax remittances, and audits for 50 plus taxing jurisdictions. * Keep apprised of all current technical matters and changes to excise tax laws. * Responsible for maintaining the integrity of tax rates and rules within the systems used for motor fuel tax compliance. * Adhere to all Sarbanes Oxley controls. * Interpret fuel tax laws and apply them so as to minimize tax liabilities. Prepare timely research memos for various areas of the company when new issues arise. * Maintain the tax calendar. * Consult with internal and external legal counsel and outside tax consultants on various issues relating to Valero’s ongoing business such as customer tax disputes, administrative hearings, contract negotiations, acquisitions and divestitures. * Recommend changes in the business process when new law changes occur. * Understand fuel tax determination within SAP and fuel tax reporting software and provides recommendations to Systems Development when changes need to be adapted. * Oversee licensing for new business requirements. * Identify issues within returns and timely manage return amendments to meet open statute periods. * Provide timely tax strategies for improving the business process of the fuel tax function. Review tax language within contracts for terminals and commercial business related to fuel tax and update language when needed. * Maintain integrity of the file system for research projects and for returns. * Hire, train, and maintain sufficient and appropriate staff to ensure that the above-mentioned tasks are properly and timely performed. * Recognize and handle personnel-related problems. This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay. **Qualifications:** *Minimum Requirements:* * Bachelor’s or higher level degree in Accounting or related field required. * 10 years of experience in Accounting or motor fuel tax required. * 3 years of experience in supervisory or management role working with staff. * Experience performing state tax research using tax services (e.g., CCH, RIA, BNA, etc.) required. * Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero San Antonio location, required *Preferred Requirements:* * Master’s degree preferred. * CPA preferred. * Experience in a similar industry or corporate environment preferred.
