Summary
The Managing Director will report to the SMD of Counterparty Credit and is primarily responsible for direct management and continuous improvement of the Counterparty Credit underwriting program, which covers an expansive portfolio of the bank’s product offerings. The MD is responsible to safeguard the Bank’s interests by ensuring that Webster Bank only admits and transacts with counterparties that are financially and operationally sound and meet the expectation of Webster’s management and Board of Directors. The MD will contribute to the development of the (1) counterparty surveillance program, (2) leverage stress testing data and reporting in support of credit underwriting decisions and (3) will collaborate with Credit Risk Reporting and Analysis (RRA) for all complementary reporting and analytical needs.
Key responsibilities for the role:
Author, review and manage pipeline of counterparty credit underwritings for effective cash flow analysis, compliance with department underwriting standards (CAMELS), and ensure alignment to internal credit rating policies and procedures; serve as reviewer on analysis produced by junior staff members.
Demonstrate technical expertise to incorporate data and create analytical reports from various external sources (S&P Market Intelligence, Bloomberg, Moody’s, Fitch, etc)
Provide expert credit input and effective challenge on all requests for new or expanded counterparty relationships, including recommendations for protective covenants, where necessary.
Maintain files for assurance of credit and collateral documentation, regulatory compliance, and product policy conformance; review technical exceptions and deficiencies; maintain reports of continued outstanding underwriting exceptions to the appropriate management forums.
Demonstrate subject matter expertise in financial statement analysis, SR 11-10, OCC Heightened Standards policies and stay abreast of industry trends, emerging risks, and innovations in credit risk management.
Along with the SMD for Counterparty, develop, enhance, and actively leverage the surveillance program for Counterparty underwriting purposes.
Assist in the development of rating criteria, including forming recommendations to bolster analysis and iteratively improve existing frameworks.
Key skills/experience qualifications for the role:
Bachelor’s Degree Required-Business, Finance, Accounting or Economics preferred.
7-10 years of related experience- commercial credit analysis required with the completion of a formal credit training program preferred; ability to critically assess counterparty credit risk exposure, including a deep understanding of the CAMELS rating methodology and other industry accepted credit rating methodologies.
Demonstrated analytical writing with the capacity to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in a wide variety of entities, including but not limited to financial institutions, non-bank financial institutions and insurance companies.
Familiarity with securities markets, derivatives, and options trading strategies is preferred.
Good presentation skills with demonstrated confidence in conveying key concepts in Counterparty Credit and related topics as a subject matter expert.
Exceptional level of personal responsibility, appropriate initiative, and self-management to meet deadlines.
Analytical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and attentiveness to detail.
The estimated salary range for this position is $175,000 USD to $190,000 USD.
Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
