Department Summary: The Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center within MITRE Labs drives innovative solutions in technical areas such as enterprise networks, 5G/6G/xG, intelligent networking, cloud/hybrid infrastructure and tactical networking. The innovation center works across the national security sector, public sector, and other mission partners, including industry, academia, and other federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs). The Director of Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center is responsible for leading this organization in creating innovative and disruptive solutions in the public interest, while cultivating world-class technical capabilities and workforce. Strategic leadership, creativity, and flexibility to work across evolving and diverse problem sets are essential. This role will emphasize advancing next-generation wireless technologies, including 5G/6G/xG, RF spectrum management, and edge computing, to address national challenges and opportunities. The director will shape the center’s technical vision, focusing on wireless infrastructure innovation and the integration of cutting-edge telecommunications technologies into mission-critical applications. Roles & Responsibilities: + Strategic Leadership: + Lead the Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center, creating a unified vision and strategy for advancing wireless infrastructure and networking technologies, with a focus on 5G, 6G, and beyond. + Identify major national challenges and technology opportunities in wireless communications, spectrum management, and edge computing. + Build cross-domain teams to tackle challenges in areas such as private 5G deployment, spectrum allocation, and multi-modal communication. + Technical Innovation: + Define, mature, and evolve the center’s research and technical capabilities in 5G/6G/xG, resilient and intelligent communications infrastructure and edge computing. + Advance the development of wireless and enterprise infrastructure solutions, including RAN (Radio Access Networks), SDN (Software-Defined Networking) and Virtualized Networking Functions (VNF) + Translate lessons learned across multiple application domains to continually advance MITRE’s impact in wireless communications, infrastructure and networking. + Workforce Development: + Recruit, train, and develop world-class talent in wireless infrastructure and networking technologies. + Foster an environment of technical excellence, research currency, and impactful innovation. + Partnership Building: + Build dynamic partnerships with industry, academia, and government to advance the center’s capabilities in 5G/6G and next-generation networking technologies. + Lead new collaborations across government, industry, and academia to address national challenges in telecommunications and networking. + Operational Leadership: + Manage division operations, including funding, staffing, and supervising department heads and division staff. + Shape strategy for internal investments in infrastructure and networking technologies to ensure MITRE is positioned to deliver on its public service mission. Basic Qualifications: + Minimum of 15 years of related experience leading technology development and integration, strategy and business development, technical and engineering services, and program and portfolio management with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 10 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. + 10+ years of hands-on and management experience in wireless infrastructure, networking, or related areas. + Demonstrated technical depth in one of the following areas 5G/6G, RF spectrum management, software-defined networking, virtualized networking, or edge computing, as evidenced by external technical stature and/or a published record of research or program impact. 5G/6G subject matter expertise (SME) highly preferred. + Experience building and leading geographically dispersed organizations with a highly technical work program and significant number of employees. + Excellent leadership skills, including persistent, tactful, and persuasive communications, influencing, conflict resolution, and building trust. + Demonstrated ability to develop a strategic vision and use that vision to guide short- and long-term execution. + Local and overnight travel to geographically dispersed sponsor and MITRE locations will be required. + Active DoD Top Secret Clearance and willingness to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Clearance. + This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site. Preferred Qualifications: + Advanced education with a relevant Master’s degree or PhD. + Experience with national security and public sector problem sets. + Familiarity with Federally Funded Research & Development Centers (FFRDC). + History of success developing new pilots, programs, and mission applications in wireless communications, including navigating internal organizational processes and government programmatic processes. + Demonstrated ability to prioritize across multiple competing demands and simultaneously handle diverse commitments to multiple stakeholders. + TS/SCI clearance.
